Town Based Social Network

I want to create a town based social network site. Users join the site and then are prompted to join their town. This way instead of creating whole new communities users will basically be joining a social online version of their town. The towns page will then have a calender where community events will be listed and a discussion board for town members to discuss things going on in the town. I was wondering if I could get some help setting up such a site using wordpress and buddypress!

Cool idea. It sounds like BP is a good fit, with BP groups used as towns.

Some places to start:
– Change the word ‘group’ to ‘town’ throughout BP text and URLs: https://codex.buddypress.org/extending-buddypress/customizing-labels-messages-and-urls/
– Setting up group forums: https://codex.buddypress.org/buddypress-site-administration/buddypress-forum/ (see the bottom section)
– EventPress, a BP plugin for events: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/eventpress/

Okay great! Thanks a lot. I will definitely try and get it up and working.

The idea is mainly based around the point of “why create new communities when offline communities already exist?”. So basically just move them online.
