Translation complications. Am I the only one?

I have roamed the site long enough but I haven’t a concise document explaining how to put buddypress in a language other than English. It seems everyone has to devise their own way of doing things because what works for one is not working for the other.
Question: Can someone point me in the right direction. That is, I have finished translating buddypress to swahili and uploaded the files to the wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-languages. The plugin is not picking up the language though! What else am I gonna have to do?
