@swalky it might be some 3rd party js specific conflict or theme js itself. You can follow the following steps to isolate the issue

I have followed the steps you have referred me to and the issue still persists. I tried activating the ‘twentyseventeen’ theme and still experience issues with joining and creating groups.
It is worth noting that i can create groups as an admin, just not as a member?
I am using WordPress 5.4.1 and BuddyPress v 6.0
Hi, did you disable all other plugins and test to see if that resolved the problem? If that works you will need to re-enable one by one to find which is causing a conflict.

I have systematically disabled all plugins except WP and re-enabled 1 by 1. It turns out the root cause of the problem was the ‘Paid Memberships Pro – BuddyPress Add On’ plugin. When i enable this, users cannot create or join groups.
Do you know how i resolve this going forward, as i may wish to use this plugin in the future?
