username limitations and red boxes

In my registration form (colofurs.com/register) when you enter a username, any username, a red empty box appears below the username. It’s supposed to be an error of some kind, but it’s just empty. It doesn’t seem to interfere with registration, but it does the user experience. Anybody point me in a good direction to go?
