Whats with the big red backgrounds behind buddypress.org post links?distracting!

    Hi i notice you have added a big red background behind each link now when browsing the posts on this forum, can i ask WHY? Because my first thought after using this forum for a while was NOOOOOOOOOOO! lol

    The reason i say this is because it really is a distraction from reading the topic titles themselves, i dont know why you did this but remove it already! hahahaha

    If you’re talking about the sub-forum links on each topic on the main page – I have to agree.
    Of all things needing attention on this site, that wasn’t one of them, lol.
    But at least it’s a sign that things aren’t static.

    @shanebp yes indeed i was talking about them very links haha, man its driving me crazy as i spend most of my time browsing through the main page rather than in the actual sub forums as i like to read alot about everything, i keep getting distracted by the boldness of these links when trying to read the titles.

    The goal was to draw attention to the fact that individual forum categories even exist, as a fair amount of topics in our forums end up in the wrong place.

    Any suggestions how to emphasize individual forums without that emphasis being distracting to you?

    @johnjamesjacoby well if it was me personally i would either tone the color of red down slightly, but i think the better idea in this case may be to make the topic titles themselves a darker red to match more in with the background color of these links, so that the attention isnt taken from the categories (because putting a background behind them is enough of a statement anyhows) whilst staying in tune with the eye. (but you may not be happy with this if trying to keep in tune with the buddypress color)

    either way its down to you i can only suggest to you. as it stands in my opinion the boldness of the color behind the link sort of makes the topic titles less visible.

    Edit: After looking again maybe just try a few shades lighter so the eye sees it as the same color of the titles. or you could even lighten the color of the background and add a 1px border a darker red around it.

    Remove both the background colors.
    Change the text color to black.

    In In bb-base/style-buddypress.css:

    #bbpress-forums p.bbp-topic-meta .bbp-topic-started-in a {
    	/* background-color: #be3631; */
    }

    In bb-base/style.css:

    #bbpress-forums p.bbp-topic-meta .bbp-topic-started-in a {
    	color: #000000;
    	padding: 2px 5px;
    	border-radius: 3px;
    	font-size: 10px;
    	font-weight: bold;
    }

    maybe @shanebp is on the right track but i have an idea, seeing as you want to make it stand out more than just text do as shane said and add a 1px border #be3631; , so you are still makeing a statement!

    laughing together is part of a user community. πŸ˜€
    Comparing a web 1.0/prehistorical best of site to our forum is off topic, of course, but demonstrate the existence of extremes in matter of design.
    To each his own. We must tolerate diversity… and so far, strong red category titles.

    Even if i personaly suspect a surreptitious advertising for a jamaΓ―can beer. πŸ˜‰

    @modemlooper That’s not a bad idea. I’ll work towards that approach after 2.2 goes out today.

    Just a couple further thoughts about this, since you guys are re-thinking it:

    If you really want people to get into the right sub-forum, why show a long list of topics in the first place? If they’re browsing, they’ll click an interesting-looking topic, and then end up posting their own question in whatever category they find themselves in (or append their question to an existing topic).

    On the other hand, if they arrive at /support with the intention to post a query without browsing first, it isn’t immediately obvious that a category must be chosen first in order to do that.

    An alternative:
    buddypress.org/support perhaps shows a couple/few sticky posts, but the main content is a modified version of @modemlooper’s ‘When Asking for Support’. I’m guessing few people actually open that link before posting. For clarity, it might even be sub-divided into its troubleshooting advice, and the installation-environment probes.

    I’d follow (or even precede) that with concise instructions on initiating a query by first selecting the relevant category from the sidebar list.

    If there is a desire to just have all posts sorted by most-recent, just link to such a page. The /support page as it stands now seems to be geared for browsing.

    Just my two cents, I think the color’s gorgeous (but then again, this shade of red is a personal favorite) and as a new user, it immediately draws my attention and helps me get oriented with the forums. It’s not distracting because I do need and appreciate big red signposts telling me where I am in the forums, etc, but maybe it could be made optional for users?

    Damn! Thats it staying then, Always listen to the woman, the woman is always right! πŸ™‚
