Where does the avatar get defined?

I am using a WP twentyten child theme with buddypress template pack. No matter what I set the avatar to in settings->discussion I always get Mystery man showing. This isn’t the end of the world I know but the size is set at 128×128 ! Can anyone tell me where this is all defined and how to change it. i have used a css change to limit the size to 50×50 but I’d really like to get to the source of the problem i.e. where is the avatar type defined for BP and how can I amend it?

You can set the default avatar type in your WP backend under ‘Buddypress’ > ‘General Settings’.
