Which forums are you trying to use – the internal bbPress Forums for Groups or the bbPress 2.+ plugin Sitewide Forums? https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/
not too sure, i downloaded buddypress, then went to forums and clicked the “download sitewide forums” thing
what do i set the link on my forums page to?
i followed all those steps and it still doesnt work.

If you’re on WP 3.2.1 and BP 1.5.1, go to admin dashbard Settings > Forums – Archive Slugs – Forums Base and check what you have there. If the base is forums then go to yoursite.com/forums or if base was changed to sitewide-forums, then go to yoursite.com/sitewide-forums/ (assuming you’ve got single WP install or that BP is installed in main site of a multisite install.
look at the website,
you can see how the forums link just links back to the home page, but the slug is forums.
when i deactivate the plugin, it works.
Do I create a page called forums?

Create a page called forums
Go to the BuddyPress menu in the admin and click pages
Assign the forum component to the forum page
