Hi there,
If you have FTP access to your site I would go to the wp-content/plugins directory and rename the buddypress directory to buddypress-old.
See if that get’s your site back up.
Yes. Renaming the plugin folder as suggested does allow access to wp-admin. Why is this? I am using a current install of WP.
Either something went badly wrong with your install, wich is unlikelu or there’s something running on your site that is seriously messing with BuddyPress. Now you know how to recover from this, you could disable all other plugins, switch to the 2017 theme and then re-enable BuddyPress, to see if it works on it’s own.
WordPress 4.9.5 running Twenty Seventeen theme. The only change to WP is that I deactivated Hello Dolly and installed Jet Pack. There are no other files in public_HTML. If you have no other thoughts, I am going to try terming this cPanel user and starting with a fresh domain, then I will install BP on WP
Jet Pack.
THANKS for getting me this far.
I evaluated BP a couple years ago and really want to use it on this new site, so I am going to try everything.
Yep that’s what I’d do and if that didn’t fix it I’d be thinking bout php versions and the likes, though I’v run BP down to php 5.2 with no issues.
cpsrvd 11.68.0.38
Database client version: libmysql – 5.1.73
PHP extension: mysqliDocumentation curlDocumentation mbstringDocumentation
PHP version: 5.6.30
Both db abd php versions are quite old but not outsde of those supported I think, not exactly sure about db version, I’m on 5.6.
All right. Everything is working now. I did NOT refresh the domain as mentioned in a prior post. Here is what I did:
1. From wp-admin, I deactivated Jet Pack plugin.
2. Set plugin folder back to “BuddyPress” (we previously set it to use -old suffix).
3. From wp-admin, reactivated BuddyPress
4. Confirmed that BuddyPress DOES work.
5. From wp-adminm, reactivated JetPack.
6. Confirmed BuddyPress STILL works.
There seems to be some unknown defect/inconsistency between the BP and JetPack plugins.
Note that there are other threads in this forum about JetPack problems that indicate SSO needs to be turned off. In my case, it wasn’t on, so that doesn’t seem to be the same problem.
Hope this situation and resolution helps someone else.
Best regards! CHUCK
Future viewers. My problem recurred right after I wrote this. It appears that BP and Jetpack are incompatible and cannot work together. I have turned off Jetpack for this site though that is not desirable. If anyone has any words of wisdom I will take it.
Also, if there is a developer with time on your hands that wants to tackle this problem……I have a clean site that can be used as a playground if you want to do some testing. Let me know.
