WordPress Category Template and BP (?)

I finally got a grip on creating category template files within WordPress. Create ‘category-slugname.php’, upload it and voila.
Can you not do the same thing when BuddyPress is being used?
I’m using a modified version of the BP theme “FakeName”. When the site I am working on was a flat WP site I had a file named ‘category-scholarships-grants.php’, and it worked fine.
Created a ‘category-scholarships-grants.php’ file and put it in the FakeName theme directory (which I know is correct because I’ve made modifications for header.php, sidebar.php)… and the category file does not have any effect on the category.
