Yep – that plugin didn’t work, I was still able to register with a space. The plugin hasn’t been updated in over a year either.

Thanks @inkblot but BP does manage the registrations, not WP — IE how it used to disable uppercase characters because of conflicts within BP. I’ll take a look at that plugin later – for some reason the Plugin directory isn’t loading properly atm.

Also, search through the forum for the activation email problem. It’s common and often times is related to your hosting provider or MX settings.

@chiangmai – It could be because it’s not compatible with BP, I’m not familiar with that plugin but not all WP plugins are compatible with the BP registration process.

I’ve had success with Wanguard and asking a specific question. I’ve only had one spammer come through in the last month. I tried other CAPTCHA plugins before, and the CAPTCHA wouldn’t show in IE.

I wouldn’t use WangGuard because it sounds like that could easily cause problems for non-bots.

I’ve been having good success with SweetCaptcha, I haven’t had any complaints from anyone & it seems to work for people from all cultures. One bot through since installing, but that is a lot less than lots of bots a day.

Opps, nevermind. I had Groups disabled under Components, but not Discussion Forums because when I was installing the site-wide forums I did get an error back for not having that checked so I re-checked it. Unchecked it and those two items disappeared and the forums are still working for now.

Thanks… but I already had both unchecked and those two items still appear.

You can use another plugin that requires to be invited via email, and once they register they can connect with WP-FB-Autoconnect. However, WP-FB-Autoconnect has been removed from WordPress.org, I’m not aware of what the reasoning was for that. If you’re wanting people to register and then be approved, you might want to consider putting up a form for them to apply & then you can send them the invitation through the plugin.
