“Join Group” button missing from Groups Directory

  • I’m fairly new to buddypress but am I missing something? Is the “Join Group” in the group directory listing a standard feature or is it an addon? If it’s an addon. can someone please kindly point me in the right direction? Thanks. I’m currently using the “Speed” template: http://317.milo317.com/groups/

Join Group will only appear with groups that you have set up as “Public”. Private Groups will have a “Request Membership” button, and hidden groups will appear for you as an admin, and for users that are already members, but will otherwise not appear.

As the Admin/Creator of the group, you won’t see any of these buttons. Try logging in as a reg subscriber.

I’ve set up a subscriber account to test the theory to no avail. As a general subscriber, this is what I see for public groups:

This is taken while logged in. No “join group” button there. I looked at the markup and didn’t even see any info there either. Unfortunately, I’m rather new to Buddypress so finding the right hooks for this in the default template is kinda flying over my head….

Maybe this is a stupid idea but….
Isn’t that what you see when your logged in as admin and you are already a member of the group because you created them? Try the same with a fake account.

Not a stupid idea at all Speel. I was logged in as a subscriber and not admin when I did the screenshot. Not apart of any groups, just a fresh account. Are there certain Buddypress Hook for the join button that I can try to place in there? I didn’t create any of the groups except for the “Colony 001″ group (as an admin).

@oddzuki it might just be an issue with your custom theme. Change to bp-default theme.

Can I ask if you worked out what the problem was? I am having the same problem. The join group button is missing from the group directory and also the group home page.

Same point to be reiterated as that which @mercime  mentioned above, is this issue happening with the BP-Deafult theme?

First thing that must be done when issues arise is revert to the default BP theme , if then the issue clears up you have an problem with your custom theme – custom themes are not necessarily a concern of this help forum though as this forums purpose is to provide help/guidance with the BP core application and it’s default theme.

In the first instance issues with custom themes must be taken to the theme author or that themes forum  – if one exists.

If, however, an issue persists then the next step is to disable the fifty nine plugins that are running as any one of those ‘May’ be causing a problem and that needs to be confirmed one way or another by the user – we can’t do that for them.

If having run through those steps an issue persists then it may well be a BP issue that needs attention.

If you have done everything mercime and hnla suggested and you are still having issues then I would suggest hiring an experience developer to sort it out for you because it is just a guessing game at this point and an experienced developer can usually find and resolve the issue fairly quickly!

It shouldn’t be a last resort. Time is something money can never buy back in this life. If you wasted 20+ hours of your life trying to get something done on guesses and you still haven’t resolved it and you have to resort to hiring a dev then you wasted 20+ hours of your life and you still have to pay a dev. Point being 20+ hours of wasted time and the inevitable still remains.
