The cover image is very distorted on mobile devices
Cover images work best when the original image is large enough. You can disable cover images for groups and/or members at wp-admin > settings > buddypress > options:
• Group Settings > Allow customizable cover images for groups
• Profile Settings > Allow registered members to upload cover images
Hi David, the problem is you can’t select which part of the larger image is displayed when you can not crop it yourself.
Disabling cover images leaves a gray box where the image has been, this is not what you want.

I too have this issue with buddy-press;
I have also wondered if there was way to select a proposition of the image to show -: as uploading an image of one-self and the cover-page randomly cutting the head of the image posted, is the concern it self for me.
A long time ago i noticed a plugin code which gives user the ability to re-positions the cover image, sadly it no longer work any-more.
As i wish there was a way in cover-image to select the portion of image to be displayed.likely as mentioned by @carsten-lund

Why does not Buddypress offer cover image crop but profile image?
It’s hardly choose cover image users want!

Yes, not least because the dimension of the image is important for better results, according to the guideline:
“For better results, make sure to upload an image that is larger than 720px wide, and 225px tall.”
The users are not nerds, why not help them by showing a cropping tool, so they can choose which part of the image they want displayed within this dimension?
Generally, that is the problem with BuddyPress – top functionality, but the design sucks, and options for customization is very nerdy.
Quite a few of my users also wish to be able to crop their cover photos. Is there custom code I can add to allow users to do this? I haven’t found it on any of the forum posts so far and most are over a year old. This seems to be the most recent.
For those searching, here’s the codex of cover images (group and profile) and tells you how to customize the image size that you will accept for this area, but still not telling you how to allow cropping.

Hi there, I started the topic, and just to clarify, of course the subject should have been why you can’t crop the cover image.
The best solution I found so far, is BP Cover, which at least let you frame the cover image up and down.
