The best options for a newbie…

    So… I guess this is miscelaneous.

    I have bbpress successfully installed next to my wordpress blog. Buddypress looks great. Trouble is, I really don’t know PHP so I hesitate to start playing to much with these things especially since bbpress seems to be a dead product (anyone beg to differ?)

    What’s the future here? Are we looking at things that are going to become plugins? or will these things always stand along? What I really want is an excellent forum with some networking features. Would love it if it all worked with facebook connect. nothing too fancy, but I dont’ want to get lost in a quagmire of plugins or needing to learn PHP.

    Any thoughts on where these projects are heading? How much support they’re gonna have, and so on?

    I know the bbPress team (incl. Matt Mullenweg) are working on a point release to fix bugs, so it’s not dead.

    Thanks! Simplepress actually looks pretty good. Do you know of a side by side comparison with bbpress?

    It would be really great to have some more advanced features – allow people to have proper profiles, form groups and rate responsed and so on…. I asume that’s more of a buddypress kind of thing?

    Finally – facebook connect and making use of other ways to log in seem really important to me. What are the big disadvantages to just sticking with bbpress, or simplepress for that matter?

    The profiles are the buddypress parts.
