Can BuddyPress Function Like Ning.com

Can BuddyPress Function Like Ning.com? As a network of mini, independant social networks? For example, I want my site http://www.example.com to have subdomains like scouttroops.example.com/member and so on with each member being ONLY part of scouttroops.example.com. Then I want to have a large number of subdomains like ValleyHosp.example.com/members to have their own independant social network. Basically like ning.com does, except they use numbers to identify members instead of names. Thanks for any help, I am new to WordPress/BuddyPress. Kim

No. At this time, there is no BuddyPress Multisite, BP can only be installed in one blog – main site OR one of subsites then track all member information/posts across the multisite installation. Having said that, there’s nothing to prevent a super programmer to code a script for a BP Multisite.

I am not even sure it is possible, but if someone wanted to try to create a plugin to enable this and needed something changed in core, we’d be happy to work with them. There’s been no discussion of this making it into the BP 1.3 release, so if it did, it’d be included in a release next year.

Thank you very much for the help. Mercime – do you know anyone that could do this and how much do you think it would cost? Or what about putting the subsites in their own subdomains and add buddypress to each individual subdomain? Thanks,Kim

@pickykim while there are interested devs, methinks some might wait till after BP 1.3 rolls out
in the meantime, you might want to post in the job board group – https://buddypress.org/community/groups/bp-jobs-board/forum/ good luck.

This is now being discussed on at least three threads simultaneously. What’s confusing, is there seemed to be a moment, nearly a year ago — where it was going to be supported, and there even seemed to be a patch in the commit pipeline, I think.

I wouldn’t hold your breath for this functionality, there are a lot of issues to deal with and only a volunteer core dev team working away at all the tickets for 1.3. I think that what you seek is not a easy task and would require some dedicated coding over and above what time permits for the core team and those helping out patching and testing.

I’m also looking for this exact solution. But in the meantime, I’m thinking about using 3 separate installs: The “main” page would be a normal WP install that would highlight activity from two buddypress blogs (members wouldn’t sign in here). The two separate installs would be BP installations (my group wants distinct styling for each of these BP installations): all I want to do is share users and login credentials between the two BP installations.
