Internet Exploreer issue and Create Account issue

I’ve done a default install of Buddypress on a default install of WordPress. In Internet Explorer, the top (default) menu is vertical instead of horizontal, giving me a double header image (when I change the header image).
Also, there is no “create account” – new registration – option anywhere on the site. Only a login box, which goes to a WordPress login screen and does not have any option for someone to create a new user acccount. Any ideas??

OK – I fixed the create account issue – didn’t realize I should check the “allow anyone to register” in the “settings-general” menu. Sigh.

I am only addressing the issue of creation on new user accounts. I would have to see the site to address the other issue. For the issue of new user accounts go to Dashboard/Settings/General and beside membership check the box beside “Anyone can register” that should take care of it!
    Good luck!

    Thanks Shawn!
Issue with the menu occurs only on IE – FF & Chrome are OK – site is islandstitcheryguild.org. Any help would be appreciated…

I am not sure I am understanding you correctly. Can you elaborate further? I have checked your site on Firefox 11.0, Chrome 17.0, and IE 8 and the menu alignment and header looks fine to me. Did you make any changes and then change it back? Try Ctrl + F5 and see if that helps it may be just the cache stored on you local machine because to me it looks like a standard WP/BP install to me.

    Hi Shawn
I have the issue on IE9 – instead of a horizontal menu I get a vertical menu, with the button text at the left, and the button extending all the way to the right of the header image.
When I upload a custom header, the image is repeated – one below the other. I can attach a screenshot if you can tell me how I do that on this forum.
I haven’t changed anything, in fact I had developed a whole website with groups etc and when a friend checked it in IE, he reported the issue. So I tried a whole new install and had the same problem…
    Thanks for your time!

Send me the screenshot. Most likely it is just a simple CSS tweak.

I’m new to the forum – how do I send you a screenshot?

Just post it on my website http://www.snaplist.net23.net You can’t post screenshots here. You also can’t post complete code. It won’t allow PHP tags. I suppose it is a security issue to allow it on here.

Has the issue been resolved? If not let me know what version of WP & BP your using along with any plugins! Also, are you using a child theme?

@shawn38 you can post code here. Just surround your code with (`) backticks, the symbol between the parentheses

@mercime Ok, thank you for letting me know, that is very helpful. Hey maybe you can help Crystal. I have seen the screen shot and the navigation is displaying vertically instead of horizontally. I am thinking its something in the `#navigation` CSS. I have checked it over with the above mentioned browsers but I do not have IE 9 so I can not replicate this behavior.

@crystal-phoenix I don’t see any problem with internet explorer 9 in ‘normal’ Browser / Document mode

But if I switch (using F12 Developer Tools) to ( Document Mode: ) Quirks then the menu ( Home Activity Groups Members ) is aligned vertically…. on the left etc. ( I haven’t seen your screenshot )

Maybe something is making those ie9 browsers switch to quirks mode – but it didn’t happen to me automatically….

Although I can’t see what on your page would have caused it…

@shawn38 @crystal-phoenix just to add that for very long blocks of code, use pastebin.com and paste generated URI here :-)

I checked your with IE simulator 6 to 9 online at http://netrenderer.com/index.php and I don’t see the vertical navigation. Know that bp-default theme has a responsive layout wherein the main navigation does go vertical when viewed at smaller widths which should be taken into consideration.

the issue has not been resolved. Oddly enough, on two of our home computers is shows up with a vertical menu, but on our laptop it shows fine. On my shop’s computer it shows fine (all in IE, of course – there are no problems in FF or Chrome). One home computer is running IE8, the other IE9, so it’s not version-specific. I have the latest releases of both WP and BP – downloaded & installed from the respective websites. How does IE switch to Quirks mode? Perhaps this happened to the two computers concerned? Both our home computers have widescreens and use IE in full screen mode.
    Any help would be great!

There is a confusing amount of stuff about ie quirks mode on the internet.

It could be that a previous page put that ie tab into quirks mode.

On this page for instance, on a pc without this issue, if you click f12 in internet explorer ( Developer Tools is built into ie version 8 & 9 ) and from the developer tools dropdown bar’s Document Mode select quirks mode then put http://islandstitcheryguild.org/ in the address bar it will also be in quirks mode…

If this is actually the problem, then on the computers where this happens what is the consequence of manually switching to Document Mode ie9 standards – does it ‘stick’?
