What happened to my index.php template?

Dear god – I just installed buddypress and it “converted” my theme. I have no idea what that means, but now my index.php template is completely different. The site itself looks fine but when I enter my editor there’s no trace of my index…. what the heck happened?

Right – so I found it but I have to bloody FTP into my server to get to it? WHat the heck is buddypress doing here? If I go into my theme editor in wordpress, the only index.php file I see is some buddypress shenenegins, and not my real front page. Am I going to have to use FTP from now on to edit it?

What if I want to get rid of buddypress?

Anyone understand what I”m talking about? My index.php is no longer editable from inside WP – it’s almost as if there are two of them now. Why did this happen? What’s it mean?

    – deactivate BuddyPress and BP-dependent plugins at the same time. Then go to database and delete bp_ … tables (btw, backup database before doing this)

I haven’t encountered that issue about not being able to edit theme files at all. It would help to know the following
    – what WP and BP versions are you using?
    – what theme are you using?
Activate WP Default theme (in WP 2.9.2.) or The Twentyten theme (in WP 3.0) and see if you can go to Appearance > Editor and edit file.

If you’ve activated the BuddyPress default theme, then yes, it (of course) changes the site’s theme.

Right… so what are my options for moving these edits back? I do have backups of my templates, can I just overwrite them after getting rid of buddypress? More importantly, what happened to my index.php file? It’s now just a bunch of incomprehensible php… even though, if I FTP into the main directory, I still see my original index.php file right there and it still works fine to edit it. What does this mean? It doesn’t seem to be doing any harm, but it seems really wierd that my real index.php file is in one place and the WP theme editor thinks it’s something else now!

From the point you deleted BuddyPress plugins, themes, and database tables, it’s all WordPress now. If something’s wrong with your WP Theme, reupload your backup of WP themes, that’s all there is to it.

This is the same problem I am having. I am editing a buddypress site for a friend but I do not have access to his root sever or host, and I am trying to edit his HOME page but it doesn’t look anything like it should… or like I think it should anyway.
