I’m not sure if this is the problem but I have had issues similar to this in the past. It’s to do with the phone/cameras orientation and it’s EXIF data. This won’t fix the images for users who have already uploaded avatars but all subsequent image uploads should be sorted.

This is something that is happening to my activation emails also… This post seems to help but I have yet to follow the steps to confirm it.
