    About your other questions, it is a total custom theme, but I haven’t made any changes to it for weeks and this problem just cropped up a couple of days ago. I know for sure it just started because I use that load more all day.

    It’s difficult for me to answer the question about whether it happens in the default theme because I don’t want to change my live site because people are using it, and when I create a staging site, the load more button works in the current theme. I cannot understand why the problem only exists on the live site and not the staging site. I am creating the staging site when I am seeing the issue, it only takes a couple of minutes to create it, it’s on the same server, but the load more button works there.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Hi Henry, I have never used the console before. I went Tools > Web Developer > Web Console and then I clicked the load more button, and it said this: [HTTP/1.1 200 OK 1008ms]

    When I click that link a window comes up with a bunch of info in it, but none of it looks like errors – but I don’t know what I’m looking for.

    This may be a coincidence, but it seems like it happens at the same time of day all the time. Is that even possible? For the last couple of days it happens around 10pm PDT and it happens again when I start up in the morning around 8am. It almost seems like it happens when my computer is cold 🙂 haha. I did try on another computer though. I wonder if something happens to the server at a particular time. I don’t know. It’s a totaly mystery to me, so if you can shed any light on it I would appreciate it very much.

    Thanks.

    @amckinnell

    Actually what I ended up doing was offering him a month for free in exchange for setting his account up again. I had to create a dummy user so I could delete his first account and move all his posts to the dummy user so that paypal would let him sign up again. Then I deleted dummy user and moved all the posts over to his new account. I figured doing that was more cost effective than spending any more time trying to figure out a solution.

    Now I just need validation so that no one else signs up and puts a dot in their username.

    Enrollment is closed right now so there’s no huge rush on setting up the validation.

    If anyone knows how to set up such validation I would really appreciate advice! I would like to make it so only letters and numbers are allowed (just in case this problem exists with other characters too, who knows?)

    Thanks!

    @amckinnell

    I added validation to prevent users from registering with a space in their username. But I didn’t know it would also convert the dot to a hyphen in links. But that doesn’t seem to be the extent of the problem. If you manually put in the hyphen the page exists, but the links dont have the hyphen. It’s very strange.

    Is there anyway I can change a username? If I could just change this one guy’s username without messing everything up and then add validation to prevent it from happening again, it would solve my problem. But I don’t know how to do that 🙁

    Thanks again,
    Anne.

    I should have added,
    WP Version 3.8.1
    Buddypress version 1.8.1

    and … I cannot upgrade versions because my (stupid) developers added customizations by changing the core files. Argh. Another problem I have to sort out.
