In reply to: Plugin idea for status updates in bp 1.2
I like this very much! If there is a hot topic in your community you could change the text into: What do you think of *insert hot topic*. It’s kinda like a front page debate.. Nice!
In reply to: Feature Request: HastagsTwitter has some great ideas and if you look at this site for instance.. I want to notify you of something in a different topic then this. I reply to that topic and say something like
“I think @davidlewis might find this very interesting”
You get notified that I mentioned you in this topic and it only took me 1 character to do this. I think this is an absolutely great feature which only on BP.org would save everyone massive amounts of time
In reply to: Feature Request: HastagsIt’s coming guys!!! Check testbp.org and go to your profile.. awesome!!!
http://wpmututorials.com/plugins/buddypress-blog-author-link/ does this for the post author.. You could use the same code found in the plugin and use it for the comment author. Please post back the code because it may come in handy for others

1. Which version of WPMU are you running?
2. Did you install WPMU as a directory or subdomain install?
3. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory?
4. Did you upgraded from a previous version of WPMU? If so, from which version?
5. Was WPMU functioning properly before installing/upgrading BuddyPress?
6. Which version of BuddyPress (BP) are you running?
7. Did you upgraded from a previous version of BP? If so, from which version?
8. Do you have any plugins other than BuddyPress installed and activated?
9. Are you using the standard BuddyPress themes or customized themes?
10. Have you modified the core files in any way?
11. Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php?

In reply to: Groups: Send Internal Message to all group members?http://www.bp-tricks.com/wp-content/uploads/buddypressgroupemail.zip
It’s a plugin from WPMU Premium. If you want support or use this for commercial use or simply like to support their work, you can subscribe to their service on premium.wpmudev.org. Since this is a very small plugin I decided to share it with you (it’s GPL). Enjoy
ps: if this is not appreciated I’ll remove it asap
In reply to: we should stop whiningI haven’t seen much whining on this forum Eric73. Almost all the post on this forum are informative and friendly and I think everyone is doing a pretty good job helping others and contributing as much as they can. If people would stop “complaining” it would mean that BuddyPress would be perfect (not gonna happen) or people would stop caring about the software (which is bad).
There are always a few people who post a few useless posts or unneeded threads but so far that was handled by the members or by the mods.. So I would rather advise everyone to keep on whining in the way they’re doing it right now
In reply to: Moving to a new domain nameIn reply to: wp and bp profile syncing–works only sporadicallySeriously? Some smart guy told me otherwise.. don’t know who it was but DAMN.. thanks! Could you tell us how? And maybe tell the other poor souls who want to know as well in this topic:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/display-xprofile-field-in-blog-post
Maybe it’s better to reply there since it’s semi offtopic.
In reply to: Facebook style "links" for media rich postsMrMaz has created BP-Links which allows for easy submitting of rich media content. It’s not possible (yet) to use it in the activity stream but he said he would look into it when BP 1.2 is released.
You can find the plugin and more info here;
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-links/
It does exactly what you say; Fill in a link to youtube/flickr and it detects the video or photo. The newest version of his plugin (not out yet) allows fetching images from ANY site with images on it, so that will be even more awesome!
Killer plugin which will only get better
In reply to: wp and bp profile syncing–works only sporadically@Mike: you are saying that from BP 1.2 you can display user info (xprofile fields) into member blogs? So you could create a widget on a blog which would display basic info from the author (BP avatar + xprofile fields_
That would be great, but I’m not sure if that was what you meant to say!
In reply to: wp and bp profile syncing–works only sporadicallyThen I give up.. If you are not trying to make friends or be nice in a community which is based on collaboration and free support then I think you will have a very hard time getting help and response for your problems. Even if your problems get adressed, responded and possibly even fixed (which Andy just did) you’re actually not even thanking him. Unbelievable.. I’ll now stop with posting here before DJ Paul discovers this thread.. lol
In reply to: wp and bp profile syncing–works only sporadicallyThe post your referring to Peter is about displaying profile information in a user blog not in the themes..
While I do agree with your points (I would like this to be easier as well) it probably the way you’re saying it that’s putting people off. You seem to have a tendency to approach people in a very direct and confronting way. I certainly don’t feel the need to help you out (if I could, which mostly I can’t) if you remain to have an certain tone in your posts which seem to be very negative and overly critical. As a journalist you must know how important it is to package your message the right way, and your approach does not work very well in my opinion since you seem to be involved in all kinds of small conflicts.
Now I’ve seen you help others quite a few times in a very polite manner, so if you could try to have the same attitude towards others as the ones you’re helping, than I bet that your suggestions (which are not crazy or “bad”) could get picked up and worked upon. There’s no need to keep on raving about a certain topic if the core developer already aware of the situation and is currently working on 1.2, which we all want to see to badly.
Just my 2 cents sorry for going offtopic
In reply to: update wire on main pageOn 1.2 it will be in the default theme.. might be a solution for 1.1 available, It should be possible!
In reply to: BuddyPress – Events Component (like facebook)the situation you described above is exactly why I cancelled my subscription.. I’ve downloaded almost every plugin that might come in handy I prayed that they keep on working on WPMU/BP because you will not receive support after a cancellation of your subscription. They have some good plugins but I also noticed their work is not always as good as it seems to be features and support wise.
Not saying it’s bad or anything, absolutely not. But they seem to have much on their plates workwise and that means that fixes/new features are not added as fast as you would like. Just my opinion and I do like their support and service they offer
In reply to: Display xprofile field in blog post?Good question.. I did not know it was possible to display BP related info into blogposts? That could lead to many cool things like a “About me” widget on a user blog which displays info coming from their BP profile..
In reply to: Photo Albums…. omfg!!Swaymedia I think you should try to see the perspective of the people that are actually taking the time to write these extensive plugins like Brajesh his Gallery component. This is not something you can do easily it takes a lot of time, effort and support (after release).
Imagine you working hundreds of hours on something and then giving it away for free and spending most of your free time working on it. Having to deal with people who are STILL complaining and asking for more features without paying anything for it. Frankly that’s a big part of the life of a BP developer right now, and your reply makes it even more clear how ungrateful people can be.
You would not even have BuddyPress if it was’nt for people like Brajesh who work their ass of for free. If you still want more and are not satisfied then you should create it yourself, for free! And don’t forget to release it to all of the other users and give support and handle all the complaints and feature requests!
Looking forward to your plugins!
edit: another thing.. I’m a member of BuddyDev and the cool thing is that you can directly ask for features you would like to see developed. Right now we (Brajesh, Mercime and others) are brainstorming about Default Global Widgets (for blogs) Facebook Connect Pro and many other cool ideas, which actually have a good chance of being made by Brajesh.. Combine that with some great plugins like “Let a user choose a theme on signup” and the upcoming Gallery component and you have a huge bang for your buck
In reply to: Add class to input type="submit" in core filesThanks that’s a great tip Suzanne!
In reply to: 1.1.3 or 1.2?that’s right mercime, thx for clearing that up
In reply to: Terminology – Apples to OrangesThe thing that exites me the most about the merge is all the experienced WordPress developers being introduced to a whole new platform to work on and develop for. I can’t wait to stop having to ask the same question over and over again; Is is WPMU compatible? Never no more!
@Peter: *deep sigh*
In reply to: 1.1.3 or 1.2?Basically I’m thinking ahead as much as possible and doing the design in photoshop for my project. Besides that I’m constantly looking for plugins and hacks to get everything running as soon as BP 1.2 is released and pray that the almighty BP gurus are able to get their awesome plugins compatible with 1.2.
In the meantime I network with some people who know their stuff, work on some other non BP projects and actually try to spend some time AWAY from the computer
That’s basically what I’m doing, but I understand your frustration and right now you have to stay patient a little longer before you’ll get the payoff!
In reply to: Terminology – Apples to OrangesIt’s funny because when I first found out about WPMU is was indeed wildy confused about what it meant exactly. Already familiar with single WordPress I installed WPMU because I wanted to use BuddyPress and thought it was some kind of special version of WordPress (not realizing the Network of blogs/sites kinda thing).
After I got BuddyPress up and running and started a blog I got launched into another admin panel which suddently missed all kinds of menu options and had a different name.. “WTF is going on here” was my initial response..
Until I realised that WPMU actually allowed me to setup multiple blogs from one panel and would allow me to create a network of sites!
This name change is a good thing and much easier to grasp. It does make me think; should I call new blogs on my network “sites” or “blogs”.
In reply to: 1.1.3 or 1.2?You should absolutely wait till 1.2.. Most important factor is the completely rewritten Activty stream which adds SO much to the overall experience for your users. It’s the main reason why I’m “stlll” waiting to start working on the final design of my site!
Andy also mentioned that 1.2 will have backwards compatibility built in and 1.1 plugins should not break. At the moment they are not working because those functions are not yet in the trunk!
In reply to: Joinless groups? In reply to: Joinless groups?David have you seen this plugin:
http://buddypress.webdevstudios.com/blog/2009/11/13/buddypress-registration-options/
It pretty much does what you want and helps jumpstart your community.
What I would like to is some kind of option for an admin to create a group which not gets listed in the users group list but the member is actually part of (without choice) and receives updates from. Something you might call a “sitewide group” or something!
