In reply to: No List icons next to wire/activity
It might be useful to start a new topic for any theme specific issues. The title of this one doesn’t lead anyone to know that it’s a theme issue.
In reply to: No List icons next to wire/activityI don’t know the nature of your theme customization. I’d install the entire member theme and take a look at the differences between the current theme and your mods.
I don’t have much experience with the themes. When you find that you need help with that area I know that others have been modifying and creating new member themes. I’m sure they can help out with specific issues.
In reply to: How to: Modify the bp admin barOh ya. the class=”alt” css things are what alternate the colors in the drop down. You can just drop whatever function you do create in bp-custom.php along with the add_action() call and it works pretty slick.
In reply to: How to: Modify the bp admin barI have a special fondness for the admin bar. It was the first thing I started modifying in bp.
You’ve got to create a new function that responds to the action ‘bp_adminbar_menus’. Something like this:
function my_help_link(){
?>
<li><a href="http://someplace.org">Help</a>
<ul class="your-ul-list-css-classname">
<li><a href="http://someplace.org">Help 1</a></li>
<li class="alt"><a href="http://someplace.org">Help 2</a></li>
<li><a href="http://someplace.org">Help 3</a></li>
<li class="alt"><a href="http://someplace.org">Help 4</a></li>
<li><a href="http://someplace.org">Help 5</a></li>
</ul>
</li>
<?php
}
add_action( 'bp_adminbar_menus', 'my_help_link', 14 );Here with formatting: http://pastie.org/451047
The call add_action() has a number at the end which is the ‘priority’. When the fn gets triggered in the great scheme of things. If you look at the code for the admin bar in /bp-core/bp-core-adminbar.php, you’ll see a bunch of calls like this at the end of the file. They setup the sequence for the menu items. Lower priority numbers get run first and the corresponding menu item shows up first.
I gave our little help item a priority of 14 so it shows up at the end of the normal menu item sequence. If you want to slide it in between menu items that have a priority of 4 and 6 then give your help add_action() call a priority of 5.
In reply to: No List icons next to wire/activityThat fn ‘bp_activity_user_install’ doesn’t exist in the latest core trunk. bp no longer uses individual activity tables for each user so the call fails. I’m guessing you are mixing recent core and an older version of the member theme code.
It wasn’t scarasm per se, it was a complaint. It takes time to hunt down issues. Especially on previous versions of bp. It helps for you to be specific and informative.
Anyway, I think you are going to continue to have problems like this with an older version of the member theme as your code base. The member theme reflects changes in the core and there have been plenty.
In reply to: Latest WPMU Rev & latest BP Rev not workingThere’s nothing confusing about this at all.
We’ve got wpmu installed on a linux type subdomain using the subdirectory blogs option with bp’s home theme running on a blog id other than the default root blog id of ‘1’ using beta versions of both wpmu and bp including a new restriction from bp that it be installed in /plugins/buddypress and activated sitewide with a new mechanism that replaces the old /mu-plugins scenario.
lol. Time for a nap.
In reply to: Timezone problemNobody in their right minds is going to touch this post andrepan. Try going to wordpress or wpmu’s forums and searching for ‘timezone’, ‘gmt’. You’ll see the insanity. We’ve got server time, blog time for each blog and the user’s time. Did I mention daylight savings time?
In reply to: Latest WPMU Rev & latest BP Rev not workingSo bp is running on something other than blog id 1? There’s a setting in bp-core.php BP_ROOT_BLOG which defaults to blog id 1. It only seems to be used to determine the root domain for bp in bp_core_get_root_domain(). It does a get_blog_option() for ‘siteurl’.
Is bp.domain.com a wpmu subdomain blog?
In reply to: custom slug via bp-custom makes menu icons disappearMaybe I\’m not looking at the same icons you guys are. *Exactly* what icons? What change did you make hyrxx to override what css file?
In reply to: Latest WPMU Rev & latest BP Rev not workingr1746 wpmu 2.7 branch and r1347 bp trunk work fine for me using stock bp themes. Just updated both.
In reply to: No List icons next to wire/activityNow that you mentioned what theme you are having problems with it might be easier to help. Now I get to guess what file that code lives in and what version bp you are using.
In reply to: No List icons next to wire/activityThe bullet images that show up in the activity stream are background images that live in the home theme’s /images directory. They are defined in the /css/base.css file. If your theme doesn’t define them in css or they aren’t located in /themes/<your theme>/images then they won’t appear.
Talk to your theme author.
In reply to: custom slug via bp-custom makes menu icons disappearThen you are losing the icons for some reason other than the slugs.
In reply to: recent blog widget picks up drafts, too?The cets blog defaults 1.2.2 plugin changes the first blog post status to ‘draft’ with a direct sql query to the posts table *after* the post has been created. It does not use the standard wp post functions. It does not trigger any actions that would let bp know that the status of a post has changed.
Talk to the plugin author.
In reply to: Thanks to all of you!Ya, thanks Jessica. You done with your site? What’s the url?
In reply to: custom slug via bp-custom makes menu icons disappearAre those the icons we are talking about?
In reply to: custom slug via bp-custom makes menu icons disappearThe menu icons in the member theme, the little bullets, next to ‘Activity’, ‘Profile’ etc. don’t change based on the member slug. They don’t have anything to do with it.
They are defined in css and are fixed elements that get displayed as background images like this: url(../images/activity_bullet.gif) based on the location of the base.css style sheet.
They still show up fine even after I changed the members slug to something else in bp-custom.php with the cache disabled in the browser. This is on the latest bp trunk.
Are you using the default member theme? What version bp? Are those the icons you are talking about?
Now we’re talking Jeff.
In reply to: BuddyPress Group Forums not updating in bbPressI’ll reply to the name issue here also. The group names and descriptions can be arbitrarily long and can trash the theme layout in bbpress. These are two different software packages Elody and I chose to be as minimally invasive as possible. I left the forum name and description up to the bbpress/wpmu admin’s discretion.
I didn’t think that a site admin would be too happy to have the theme broken by a long group name.
I included a way out also. The name and description of the group are pulled over to bbpress and are available as template tags for you to use.
oci_group_name()
oci_group_description()
In reply to: Trying to Clone GroupsIf you need a practice area and a live area then just create some ‘practice’ groups. You can also create two installs one for development and training and one to go live with. I’ve done that sort of thing with a new accounting system/point of sale system for a company.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to ‘clone’ the groups component. At the lowest level they both write to the same set of tables. You wouldn’t really be doing much except changing what the ‘practice’ area says on the screen to the users.
In reply to: Forum posters not showing rightFrom the forums installation-readme.txt:
11. Enable user switching in bbPress by copying the following line of code into your bbPress
bb-config.php file:
$bb->bb_xmlrpc_allow_user_switching = true;
Needs to be in your bb-config.php
A helpful topic here: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=471
In reply to: Can’t Register as a new user on a new installationI see you are over at the wpmu forums asking this question also. That would be the proper place to start. It doesn’t look like a bp issue since your site isn’t running bp..
wpmu does go out and try to validate the domain. It doesn’t look like it is able to do so.
Oh. bin.buddypress.org of course.
EDIT: I said that with just a knee jerk reaction. Kind of a ‘not invented here’ thing. Now that I’ve had time to think why, I realize it’s because we do need to control it. In case nobody has noticed, we’re have the opportunity to *not* follow the rules for technical support and software development. The nature of buddypress, it’s social nature, gives us the opportunity to invent something truly different and useful.
Don’t ask me yet what that is yet but signs of it are beginning to appear.
Complaints about the bp.org group forums not being live yet. They aren’t just complaints. They seem to be us, struggling to accomplish something in a certain manner and knowing that the tools are dangling before us.
We’re discussing code collaboration, commenting, sharing solutions to user problems and questions. Solving things in front of people. How best to accomplish that with code paste bins.
Suggestions and approval of a ‘technical blog’ that will show people, by example, how to do things.
It’s like we’re all suffering some vague malaise and we sense where to find the remedy.
I didn’t know we were being graded. Is there a curve? Seriously though. I see value to each approach. We’ll probably wind up using a combination of some if not all.
Thanks Lance. Nice job.
I don’t like idea of permanently using outside paste bins right off the bat for the reasons you outlined. We’re already using them from time to time for temporary things. It’s just that, transient and temporary. I do like the idea of stuffing code on one for sharing and collaborating. Forums and blogs seem to hate code. A paste bin has lovely things like line numbers and syntax hilighting. Isn’t there a code editor built into wp itself? The regular one. I’ve never seen it since I’ve only worked with wpmu where it’s insanity to hand over the source code to a theme to all blog admins and give them a ‘save’ button.
I think the Codex pages should be sources of documentation and education not guides to implementation. That little tutorial I wrote today outlining how to mod the admin bar would be better suited as a blog post on that tech blog you mentioned.
I completely agree about the new FAQ sticky forum post. It only really solves my frustration at having to hunt the damn things down all the time.
A bp group forum like the one that exists would be an asset once Andy fires up the actual group forums. One problem/solution one thread.
So, it looks like I’m voting for all of the above.
