I’m gonna have to get back to you later with the two issues you have. I have to do 6 hrs of work on my site and theme before tomorrow morn.

Does mu seem happy living in a subdir on 1and1? You can create new blogs and then access them. Make and edit posts on a blog other than the root blog? Any errors in the error log after bp install and no tables being created?

There should be major whining and complaining in there.

Is mu running in a subdir under the doc root here also? Those meta keys are from the just recently installed bp right? No error msgs in the error log after bp install?

I’m going to send off an email to Andy and Trent about this and take a look at the code to see if it might be that subdir issue. Maybe he’s in irc. Hang in there. We’ll figure it out.

This may also be why you are having problems in the other thread with table creation. Originally mu *had* to be installed in the doc root. No other install was supported. That was way back earlier in the alpha version. I thought I saw some comments come thru svn about fixing things to work in subdir installs of mu. Not the subdirectory blog creation option, just mu installed in a subdir under the doc root.

Gonna have to go look at the svn logs. brb.

Are you uploading avs and trying to crop from a subdomain or a subdir blog? bp had problems with getting the paths straight when changing or creating avs from subdomains. It seemed to go ok but was storing the wrong url to the cropped av. I don’t think the fix came thru svn yet.

Your install is like: mysite.org/muinstalldir right? mu installed in a subdir under the doc root? Am I remembering correctly?

lol. We don’t want this to degenerate into a digression on who I thought was hotter. Penny or Judy? No, no. Just stop this right now. Stop it. Just stop it.

Looking at your js being sent on the other thread.

View the source of the image crop page. Are there javascript libs being sent to the browser? Do you have js turned on in your browser?

In the viewed source for the avatar crop page you should have bunches of js libs being sent to your browser. Including a line something like this:

    <script type='text/javascript' src= ...[snip]... /wp-includes/js/crop/cropper.js ...[snip]

Depending on how old you are, that obscure reference to Lost In Space, may or may not mean something to you. :)

Just a sec. Is 1and1 a live site? In that case edit the wp_sitemeta and remove anything that looks like bp-xxx-xxx and any tables you manually created.

    CAUTION. WARNING.

If that’s the case then, if I were you, I’d wipe the db on 1and1 clean and do a complete re-install of mu and bp. It might be the easiest way to do things. If things are out of sync then neither you nor I know how to manually edit them back into sync.

I don’t doubt that it’s possible, just why bother?

I was thinking that if there was a problem initially on 1and1 creating tables, for whatever reason, and bp *thinks* they are there then it might not try to recreate them again.

bp writes some stuff in the wp_sitemeta table. Versions of each installed component. I don’t know if that is how bp decides if a component is installed or not. I’m guessing, there I go again, that it is how bp decides to create or update a table structure for a component.

Go get the ver number and do/not do something. These key/value pairs in the site meta table are bp-componentname-somethingelse. Example: meta_key = ‘bp-groups-version’, meta_value = ‘1.0b1’ in the case of the groups component and the first beta.

If bp finds goodies it likes in wp_sitemeta it happily goes along assuming that tables exist for a component. I don’t know if all the above is true or not. It’s the way I’d design it. We gotta ask Andy if that’s the way things work. Can you look in wp_sitemeta and see if key/value pairs exist for bp components that don’t have tables?

These problems and error logs are from your 1and1 install, not the bluehost install right? Any problems on bluehost? Those error logs say that there isn’t any bp tables in the database that mu is hooked up to. From your earlier posts, specifically the one where you list all the tables in the mu db, you don’t have any bp tables.

Hang on a sec lemme look at something…

Wardeh, I’ve looked at bbpress, simple:press and phpbb3. I installed, configured and toyed with all of them. IMHO bbpress is the best of the lot. It has user integration with mu, it’s fairly easy to learn and skin and it is going to be more and more tightly integrated with mu.

simple:press is just that, simple. If all you want is a quick forum component that integrates tightly with mu, it’s great. I just don’t see it going anywhere. My forums are extremely important to my site. I’m going to spend a lot of time and effort configuring and extending that component. My users are going to get used to whatever forum I hook up. I’d like the software that I’m working with to be around next year and have some kind of future.

phpbb3 is very powerful. It’s the top of the line when it comes to configuration options and sheer volume of features. If phpbb3 don’t got it, it doesn’t exist as an option or feature anywhere. It is possible to integrate with mu. I had it running that way. It’s main drawback is that it has so many options and features that it’s confusing for the end user. It’s daunting to visit a phpbb3 forum and see all the little buttons, options, links, notifications, doodads, geegaws and flashy things. I get confused, lost and frustrated myself on those. My experience has been that normal people who aren’t whiz bang computer geeks are frightened and confused by it.

bbpress also has the concept of plugins to extend it’s feature set and change it’s behavior. If I want to add or change a feature in phpbb3 then I have to modify the source code to get it.

@oceandoctor Please explain to me exactly what the problem is. I’m kinda hazy on that. All I have to go on is that somebody else is having problems cropping avs. That’s you also? What happens, where? Group avs? Member avs?

    Thanks

Howdy. That little logo lives in the directory /wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-core/images

    admin_bar_logo.gif

You can point bp to something more to your liking if you are comfortable with code.

Since long lines of code don’t paste well here see: http://pastie.org/347661

I have that running in a little plugin that does a bunch of utility bp mods I need done. You could put a modification of that in your theme’s functions.php file if you like.

If you change the dimensions of the image at all you’ll have to skin the css for the admin bar also. It lives at: /wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-core/css/admin-bar.css

I don’t think that the admin bar css can be overridden in bp’s custom.css yet. I may be wrong though.

Probably way more than you cared to know about changing a little smidgen of an image ‘eh? :)

That ver=2.6.5 number you see is the ver of mu you are running. I remember having some similar problem and similar solution that danf mentions. I had to disable the plugin’s loading of jquery all together. It was referencing an older one. Both worked fine with bp’s loading of the newer jquery.

Things that rely on javascript libs don’t always play nice with each other. They all assume that they are the only code in town. How self-centered of them.

    Nice call danf.

These weird ajax and js problems might just be that there thing. :)

lol. This ‘buddybar’ thing I started is catching on. With all the right people it seems. I’m never gonna live this one down.

The buddybar(tm) relies on lots of mu specific stuff. It gets generated on each page load in mu. We ain’t in mu no more when we get to bbpress. I’ve been thinking about this issue also. A quick think tells me I might pass a global var from mu to bbpress that holds all the menu items that are useful to me over at bbpress. Then create a bbpress menu bar that builds a menu from that global. Same look, same items just not dynamicly built for each page load. Just gens it from the global each bbpress page load.

    Just a quick think.

PHP var space is PHP var space. bbpress is just another hunk of code in PHP var space. Gotta go do some research on this php session stuff.

Wardeh! I keep yelling your name don’t I? Not sure why. Must be because you are far away. My girlfriend thinks that the farther away she is, the louder she has to be on the phone. Perhaps it’s related to that.

The bbpress theme integration issue is one we all face. I have to do it too. I just haven’t had the time yet. I agree that the group forums aren’t the easiest place to get to if I wanna talk or listen to what is going on there in my groups. I view the group forums at the moment to be a convenience.

A convenience to me in that I don’t have to create a forum for each group that wants one. Or forget to do that. Or don’t get around to doing that in a timely fashion.

You didn’t leave your contact info ehegwer.

Nice integration of bp into your theme. Then there is the evil bbpress side of look and feel that I haven’t had time to face either. Just make it go away please Santa. :)

Exactly how are you playing with bp_activity_get_list()? It requires a valid user id (you). Do you have any friends? :) Have they done anything? One of the params is a custom message for ‘no activity by my slothful friends’ result.

Hmmm. Hey psfk. What version of php is on your server? The ever popular php.net tells me that fgetcsv() takes a bunch of params but only one is required in php 5x and you need two in php 4x.

Only one is being supplied by the bp code.

@oceandoctor You probably could work around this by uploading two avs for each of your users, or just going with one of the default avs like ‘identicons’. (Site Admin > BuddyPress > Default Avatars)

I haven’t tried *turning off* a custom av though. One bp thinks you have one, you have one. If you want to run a generated av like identicon, try deleting the custom av and then configuring bp to use a stock one.

Avs come in to flavors. small and large. 50×50 and 150×150. Named: myfavav-avatar1.jpg and myfavav-avatar2.jpg. Once again bp remembers the url to these avs once uploaded and cropped. The easiest way to hook up to bp is to name them the same as the existing goofy avs. Just replace them.

@trcwest It’s not indicative of a bug to run ok on one install and then not on another install. It seems that whatever you have configured on bp.spotskenya.com is correct and the config at spotskenya.com is not.
