Please test by switching to the BP-Default theme. Does it work? If so, it’s a bug in the theme that you’re running — contact its author for support.

I would say generally that whatever the behaviour should be, it ought to be consistent.

You can use bbPress 2.1+ today with BuddyPress 1.6+. It works great for new sites, but if you’ve got existing group forum content you’d need to migrate, I’d hold off until bbPress 2.2.

What other plugins are you using? Do you see any other errors or broken functionality on your website? Finally, if you switch to the BPDefault theme, are you still unable to upload images?

For sitewide, you need to use bbPress’ template API. I don’t have the specifics to hand, but I suggest you start by lookin at codex.bbpress.org or ask on the bbPress.org forums.

How many activity items and groups do you have?

Are you using an object cache?

Right, this is a known side affect of the image crop.
