I forgot to remove the bb-custom.php file in the Plugins folder.

I get this error when actavating the plugin:

“The plugin generated 1 characters of unexpected output during activation. If you notice “headers already sent” messages, problems with syndication feeds or other issues, try deactivating or removing this plugin.”

I restored the database to before I attempted upgrading and went through everything step by step with the same results.

I tried creating new pages with different names, but that didn’t work either. Widgets, avatars, etc. work, just no pages.

Could you supply a quick guide on how to upgrade to RC1 from 1.29? Should we delete or override the older files? What if any changes should we make to the RC1 folder names…. etc. I think I got it right, but for trouble shooting purposes I want to be sure.

@gregfielding W3TC does not work with Buddypress (other than maybe very limited CDN). I wish people would stop saying it does, especially the developers. BP.org should also remove it from their recommendations for speeding up BP.

It would be nice if there was a update guide for plugin developers/users. I don’t know if it is possible, but it would be nice.

I fixed it. I just went into the WP options in the admin (wp-admin/options.php) and changed everything that was mydomain.com to dev.mydomain.com. I think the upload path was the key.

I guess a search and replace in the phpmyadmin would have also worked but this was less risky.

Of course no one is obliged to do anything, that’s not the point. BP could be a huge benefit for Automattic. As Tumblr continues to grow in popularity WP needs to look to the future. As Web 3.0 continues to develop readers are going to want move interactivity and there will be a growing demand by site owners to have a community platform. Currently BP is the best platform there is, but at some point they need to realize its full potential.

I think you misunderstand what I mean by a hook manager. It wouldn’t be part of the core, it would be a simple admin interface with the default theme.

Here is a screen shot of something similar in the Canvas Theme by WooThemes:

This way you could just simply paste whatever code/html you wanted inserted into the Hook without having to touch the functions.php. It would serve 2 purposes. First, it would make it much easier for those that get nervous editing php files and/or don’t like writing php code. Second, (and most importantly) you don’t have to remember and hunt down all your php edits when it comes time to update.

You can’t run Buddypress on BlueHost. You can, but you will have this issue. BlueHost throttles anyone running BP (3 of their tech support people told me this when we where with them). Even if it is only you with no others users. You can check for yourself in the control panel under CPU Throttling. You should leave them as soon as possible. Because even if this was not a issue, you can’t grow your site with them because they only offer shared hosting. I know lots of people do, but you shouldn’t run BP on a shared server.

The only 2 hosts I would recommend are Media Temple or Rackspace.

Here are a few:

A area for adding custom CSS.

Layout Manager (post area size, sidebar size, sidebar location, number of sidebars) (should also be able to have different layouts for each page/posts)

Sidebar Manager (different sidebars on different pages)

Hook Manager (a place to input php and html without needing to edit the functions.php)

Several Widget Locations

That’s just off the top of my head.

I know many that are not well versed in css would like custom H tags, text size, color, etc., but for me if there is a easy way to add custom css I can do without other css options.

The options should not necessarily make customizing easier. The goal should be making upgrading easier. Most people that use the theme will have some basic understanding of css and php, unlike most WP users. You don’t want to get carried away with it and end up like those slow, bloated premium WP themes full of endless database calls.

I’m not sure this is the right place for this but….

What the default theme really needs is a Theme Options Panel like many “premium” WP themes.

The only thing harder than modifying a BP theme is updating it later. Typically I’m not a fan of Theme Options Panels because they add extra bloat and database calls, but in the case of BP that would be a trade-off I would take. You can just make your changes and not have to worry about keeping track of all of them at update time.

Thanks for the links. It’s some good information on setting up CDN, but they don’t address caching and Buddypress.

From the bp-tricks article:

“Step 3: Installing and Configuring W3 Total Cache for CDN usage
Use the plugin browser to install W3 Total Cache and activate it. In the near future I’ll be posting an extensive guide for a more complete setup of W3 Total Cache, but due to the nature of BuddyPress that is a pretty complicated process.”
