In reply to: Modifying buddypress.min.css
If you do nothing but activate BP then BP uses it’s version of buddypress styles from the minified file in BP’s core template directory, however if you overload that with your own copy of buddypress.css in the correct matching directory in your theme or child theme then BP will see that and use it instead (a normal non minified file). Don’t worry too much about script_debug it was/is a means of geting around an issue on development installs.
and isn’t it a downgrade in performance if the .min.css file is being lost to a custom .css file? Isn’t the point of the .min.css file to speed things up?
Yeah, essentially however the practise has never been one that was a mandatory one or even approved of by many older hands, css is a cached file, thus once downloaded the local cached copy is used, CSS is a text based declarative language and is intended to be human readable, removing white space renders a file uneditable/readable a possible issue if needing that file to edit and unminified version not available. Part of the experience and skill set of a good frontend coder working with CSS is knowing how to write rulesets correctly in a manner that doesn’t result in massive file bloat commonly seen nowadays with 50k+file sizes.
In answer, the speed increase is negligible but most will think that any saving is worth it *shrug*
In reply to: All Members showing age of 44 years oldWell if you think it’s the theme try asking the theme authors how they are doing this, if they reply ‘we aren’t’ then you know it’s not the theme! or conversely try swapping themes and see if that dob field stops working.
What plugins that are listed as BP ones do you have running?, list them as there are ones that extend the profile field selectors such as this:
‘Buddypress Xprofile Custom Fields Type’
which also will display the date picker as a age calculation if selected.
At the end of the day if you want help it’s going to be important for you to understand how your installation is working so you can impart information as it’s required, especially where the issues are not strictly core BP ones.
In reply to: All Members showing age of 44 years oldEDIT: how are you displaying ages? Can you share the code?
Paul asked you a question, it’s vital that you respond to these as it’s impossible to help people on threads without detailed info; also it’s important to understand that BuddyPress does not do any birthday calculations from that birthdate profile field so you must have something else at work, hence the question.
In reply to: [Resolved] Require a login for sitewide activityyep think so 😉 OP take note please, not sure where you picked up on the use of die() but you don’t want to be doing that 🙂
and WP really trying to fathom how ability to render markup in a php function that effectively renders all further action null is at all useful or maybe we’re meant to render a full DOM via it? 🙂
In reply to: Markup in profile field descriptions? It does though, have you tried creating profile fields? what version of BP have you got installed?
In reply to: [Resolved] Require a login for sitewide activityReally! Running a die function midway through rendering a document, in fact what point is there to that extension of PHP die() in rendering html if ones intending on breaking a page beyond redemption. it’s a debugging function you can’t use it in a production site where rendering a page.
In reply to: New 2.1 @Mentions – does it work?Have you overloaded the bp templates to these themes? Have you modified your activity post form whats-new textarea for the required class to enable @mentions to function? If not check out the default bp-legacy template to see what you need to add.
This is custom code and not a default out of the box BP user account screen, if you have no coding experience it will be hard for you to accomplish, that said this is likely built using their cbox framework which may handle some of this type of custom screen layout?:
http://commonsinabox.org/.To achieve a screen like that requires a compliment of coding tasks, creating a custom home page screen, adding specific PHP functionality to that and then styling it up, it’s not a beginners task.
Is it simple CSS No! CSS is not simple 😉
In reply to: Register and Activate pages not workingand your registration form does show but not on an expected page but on a members page of some description, so tread carefully with these custom aspects that they work as expected.
In reply to: Register and Activate pages not workingand are you logged in? This would be expected behaviour if logged in.
In reply to: Upgrading 2.0.2 to 2.1 breaks registration templateInitial thoughts is if you are still in development why are you choosing to use the bp-default theme approach rather than using the newer(since 1.7) theme compat approach and to which you allude in trying /our-theme/buddypress/ /our-theme/community/
If that later approach were to work for you you need to understand that registration does not have it’s own folder/dir but the reg template lives in /members/ have a look at /bp-legacy/buddypress/ to see the directory structure which must be mirrored in the theme also templates under theme compat are not full page templates i.e complete with header and footer calls as they get called and injected into a parent template – generally page.php unless the hierarchy invoked and another named template is use.
Although this doesn’t address your immediate issue, unless you are wanting the old bp-default visual styling I would suffer the change to theme compat templating now before you go further?
In reply to: Integrating AJAX Activity Stream with custom markupYou’re asking questions impossible to answer.
We can’t second guess what issues might arise when allowing BP js to run, add it back in and see what transpires, it’s a far more logical approach to see what actual issues need addressing than trying to guess at what may arise.
In reply to: Integrating AJAX Activity Stream with custom markupAlso I don’t load buddypress.js in my theme.
Well that’s going to be a bit of an issue then, why are you not enqueueing the BP primary js file? This file handles a lot of BP JS functionality without wish your site experience is going to be pretty flat.
I think you need to explain your approach to your theme in respect of BP integration as I can’t really think of a good reason to not use the file, overload and modify, is an option but to leave out altogether…
In reply to: Unable To Install BuddPress PluginThis really is a server issue rather than a Buddypress one.
Internal server errors can have any number of possible causes that will be very hard for us to identify for you.
Your partial log points to “End of script output before headers” this might be file/directory permissions issues as your on a localhost, try and ensure your permissions are as open as possible.
Does your localhost site run correctly otherwise, is WP fully working in all respects, does .htaccess exist, is it correctly allowing permalink re-writing. Can you run updates through the WP admin interface? Is that domain actually in your hosts file?
In reply to: Buddypress Error / Problem on one server/host only. Can’t advise further really, that was a possible ‘thing’ to look at but if to no avail then ensure any of those related changes removed.
In reply to: Buddypress Error / Problem on one server/host only.A possible avenue to explore might be this value causing issues, it’s one wpengine have stated is or was a factor in a script problem for one of their clients.
The possible workaround for this it to add this to your .htaccess file with a new value, default is 1000
php_value max_input_vars 2000May not need pointing out, but remember that the directory/folder structure you see in /bp-legacy/ must be replicated faithfully in the theme or child theme where/bp-legacy/ is replaced with either /buddypress/ or /community/ sitting in the top level of the theme root. so if a file lives in a particular folder under bp-legacy it must live in same folder under your theme structure.

It may work better to manage a larger chunk of the activity truncation so you have control of things like excerpt length, appended text, removed create excerpt elipses, and ability to remove the class that Ajax hooks to while still allowing appended link to function for single activity. It’s a little dirty but…:function custom_activity_excerpt_read_more( $excerpt, $text, $append_text ) { // Manage the excerpt length $excerpt_length = 100; // Manage the appended string for truncated excerpts so we have a link to single activity $append_text = '…'; // Manage the initial text run through the bp create excerpt filter to remove 'ending' $excerpt = bp_create_excerpt( $text, $excerpt_length, array( 'ending' => __( '', 'buddypress' ) ) ); // Manage the excerpt appended displayed markup & rename the span class 'activity-read-more' to disable Ajax hook $excerpt = sprintf( '%1$s<span class="custom-activity-read-more" id="%2$s"><a href="%3$s" rel="nofollow">%4$s</a></span>', $excerpt, $id, bp_get_activity_thread_permalink(), $append_text ); return $excerpt; } add_filter('bp_activity_truncate_entry', 'custom_activity_excerpt_read_more', 10, 3);In reply to: Customizing BuddyPress 2.1For BP directory index pages ? ‘/members/index.php’ search is called at top of page ‘bp_directory_members_search_form()’ that function is located in /bp-members/bp-members-templates.php L:1024 you can filter the function if you needed to adjust the markup.
In reply to: Buddypress Error / Problem on one server/host only.@henrywright er um yep, sorry I can’t count the very big numbers.
In reply to: Customizing BuddyPress 2.1It’s sounding like you haven’t yet really worked with Theme Compatibility (template pack) the files that live in core /buddypress/bp-templates/bp-legacy/ these files are the ones that BP uses by default to deliver BP screens in any theme – if you are used to the older methods using bp-default theme and template pack plugin those probably need to be unlearned/discarded; theme compat templates are easier to work with and afford more options for customization.
These are the guides you probably need to read through:
In reply to: Customizing BuddyPress 2.1I’ve discovered that BP Theme Pack no longer works and that’s a big disappointment.
?? How so? Please explain.
There are guides to working with theme compat templates in the Codex, I would make a start by reading through those and seeing if those help you along, if still trying to figure out custom templates then post back with more specific requirements that are proving hard to accomplish.
I don’t know if it’s just certain themes, but
Not that clear what this issue is but you establish whether it’s a true BP issue by switching to a theme BP is expected to work with, by that we tend to mean any of the default themes WP ships with. If issue not present running, say, twentyfourteen then it’s a theme related problem.
In reply to: Buddypress Error / Problem on one server/host only.~41MB
So maybe wpengine is running default 32MB that php.ini is usually set to and which is very often too low for WP/BP and can cause issues when too many processes are trying to run.
I have to say though that given the other hosts/setups are fine this places issue firmly back with wpengine, although something else may be occurring.
In reply to: Duplicated Xprofile fieldsHave you any caching plugins running?
