    Are you using a non-english, localized version of BuddyPress? If so, this is a known bug: https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/757

    You have to add whichever custom slug definition you want to use into your wp-config.php file.

    The username field is a mandatory WPMU field. It is used by WPMU as the “user_login” field of the wp_users table. It is the necessary piece of datum that is used when a user logs in.

    BuddyPress has its own mandatory registration field that by default is called “Full Name”. Look in the BuddyPress submenu group in WPMU’s backend. Go to “BuddyPress > General Settings > Full Name field name”.

    You can change the “Full Name” field name to display whatever you want but you cannot remove that field from the registration page nor edit it to be something other than a single textbox field–at least not without hacking the core. Look under the “Basic” field grouping in “BuddyPress > Profile Field Setup” to see what I mean.

    In fact, for testbp.org, Andy did change the outputted name of that field to simply read “Name”.

    It is this BuddyPress field that is used to display the user’s name. If fact, this field can be edited by the user when they visit their profile and navigate “Profile > Edit Profile”. On the other hand, the username field, which is a WPMU field, cannot be edited.

    Gabriel-

    and then tag the clothes (describe, tag, categorize…). We want to have some level of control here.

    In case you have not seen this, there is a wonderful BuddyPress plugin that can address this need: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bpcontents/

    Are you using a custom theme? Have you added any required fields via the “BuddyPress > Profile Fields Setup” in WPMU’s backend?

    By default, WPMU with BuddyPress installed is setup to do exactly what you are asking–have one “Username” field and one “Name” field on the signup page.

    Most of the welcome message sent to new registered users is hardcoded within WPMU. Here are a few links to get you on your way:

    This will do the trick:

    <?php global $bp; ?>
    <a href="<?php echo bp_core_get_userurl($bp->displayed_user->id) ?>"
    title="<?php bp_core_get_user_displayname( $bp->displayed_user->id, true ) ?>">
    <?php echo bp_core_get_avatar( $bp->displayed_user->id, 1 ) ?></a>

    Of course John is correct. I failed to notice that you were running BuddyPress hence my “This is truly a question for the WPMU forums” comment.

    There is a constant set in bp-core.php (line 15) that allows you to set the blog ID on which BuddyPress will run. But as the trac ticket John referenced in his post indicates, setting it to anything other than “1” will currently cause issues.

    Also, this ticket applies: https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/775

    Okay, let’s start with the basics. Please answer these questions.

    You’ve already provided the version of WPMU and BP that you’re running, so you can skip those questions.

    It sounds like a different issue. I assume that you are not getting the WSOD?

    If that is the case–that you are not receiving the WSOD–then you should create a new thread as this one is resolved.

    I don’t know if it has something to do with the issue, but members who register and don’t create a blog are automatically assigned as subscribers on the root blog. This means that there are hundreds of users assigned to this blog. May this be a problem with buddypress ?

    This is normal WPMU behavior. It has nothing to do with BuddyPress.

    The NextGen Gallery plugin is a vary powerful and popular tool for WP bloggers. I suggest contacting the developers and asking them if / when they plan to support BuddyPress. Also, perhaps they will have some insight into this issue.

    Whether this plugin is causing your particular issue is yet to be determined.

    Okay, great!

    So, disregard my last post. :)

    Theme files can also cause this issue–although usually you don’t see it WPMU’s backend.

    Are you able to login as the Site Admin, or does that also bring up the WSOD (white screen of death)?

    I suggest switching to the default BP themes and see if you can login. If you can, then it has something to do with your custom theme–some recent change in the template coding, or possibly a missing custom theme file.

    If need be, you can manually change the theme selections in wp_1_options (the options table for the main site blog user) and also in wp_sitemeta. If you go this route, make sure that you first completely backup your database.

    Be careful with this procedure as it could lead to more problems. Manually editing data in the backend DB tables is never something you should consider unless you know what you are doing.

    White screen always means some error is occurring. Did you modify any WPMU or BP files? Have you created any custom files?

    If so, you could have a space before or after the opening PHP tags. Or, you might have left off something as simple as a semi-colon at the end of a particular line.

    There are many possibilities. If you have modified or created your own files recently, then that is where you should first look. If you have installed any new plugins or updated any older plugins (other than BP), then there could be some issue with them. Try disabling them (or moving them out of the way if necessary).

    There are many functions in bp-core.php and many template tags in bp-core-templatetags.php that will retrieve various user data. Take a look in those two files.

    You should not write any custom DB classes unless you are creating a custom plugin. Also, you should never modify core BP files.

    If you are simply looking to list certain members, you can try my Featured Members Widget available in the WordPress plugin repository. You may have issues if you are running WPMU 2.8.1 as I have not yet updated my widget to use the new WP Widget API.

    I do not know if the NextGen Gallery plugin modifies the wp_sitemeta table. I suggest that you disable the plugin and see if the issue goes away.

    If you are running a newer version of WPMU than is currently supported by NextGen Gallery, you could have issues.

    Also, I do know that there are some issues running BP with the NextGen Gallery plugin–with avatar cropping. It’s possible that is could be causing other issues as well. Contact the developers of that plugin and ask for their help and whether or not they plan to support BuddyPress.

    Try this instead:

    <h1 class="fn"><a href="<?php bp_user_link() ?>">
    <?php echo bp_core_get_username(bp_displayed_user_id()); ?></a></h1>

    This is truly a question for the WPMU forums.

    But if you look at the wp-config.php file, there is a constant defined for the overall site blog:

    define('BLOGID_CURRENT_SITE', '1');

    You can change that to:

    define('BLOGID_CURRENT_SITE', '2');

    But, first make a copy of your original wp-config.php file just incase something goes wrong.

    I’ve cobbled together my own one WP-install, multi-domain solution using the resources below as a starting point. But, this is only for single-version WP, not WPMU. It is also for development purposes only using vhosts on my local machine.

    Here are the articles to get you started:

    How about outputting an rss feed based on get_online_users()?

    @jeffsayre

    Did you try moving the themes to their proper locations and then try reactivating?

    This can happen to some people when they do not have the themes moved out from under the /buddypress/ directory. It happens to me each time I upgrade BP and do not move the themes. For most people, however, this does not cause any issues.
