I’m going to set this thread to resolved because, while I and others (how many?) think it is a type of bug (it’s bugging me after all), the code itself is actually working as intended. I just think it needs to be altered to do things a little differently. I will take some time (at some point) and write a recommended patch.

I spent an hour or so looking into this the other day until I realized what was going on. I do agree that it can be confusing and annoying.

Read this thread–especially my last post–for the answer!

    Update:

By the way, I should have provided a little more detail. Whereas I call this a bug, technically what is happening is all profile data, except URLs, are filtered to make them searchable–unless the field data has more than 5 non-comma separated words in a row (don’t ask why that limit, I don’t know).

So, if you hover your cursor over the field value, you’ll see this toward the end of the link:

    ?s=

This creates a search link for the keyword or phrase which when clicked on should perform a search that brings up related results. Of course, on a development site, you more than likely will not have any relevant results.

Whereas in general I like the idea of making data searchable via links (it’s sort of like tags), this implementation is flawed. At a minimum, it should not be linking the user’s “Full Name” field as the best search result for that is for the viewer to stay exactly where they currently are–on that member’s profile. Also, linking radio button groups or checkbox selections seems unnecessary. The data in these types of fields is often too specialized to be of much meaning in a search. Furthermore, the code arbitrarily excludes phrases over 5 words long. Finally, clicking on one of these links can be confusing to users as it sends them to the members homepage without explaining what is going on. Only in very large sites will any relevant results be returned.

It might be nice if there was an administrative option to not make profile fields clickable.

I have not yet figured out an appropriate patch to the filter function. But, when I do, I’ll add it to this trac ticket.

In the meantime, if you wish to simply deactivate this “feature”, you could use a remove_filter() call to disable the offending filter.

    @jensenrandy-

I’ve actually just isolated the bug. Interestingly enough, bp.org (this site) also has this bug. I suppose you could call it a feature, but creating links to what seems like nothing is a bug to me. Go into your profile on this site and look for yourself.

Of course the clue was in the linking text I highlighted in my first post–but I failed to notice. I can get the profile fields to work properly by commenting out a certain filter. I’m trying to determine the proper patch. I’ll post the bug ticket number back here when I have it all figured out.

    Please try this:

Choose your member theme once again by going to “BuddyPress > General Settings > Select theme to use for BuddyPress generated pages” in WPMU’s backend.

With a default BP install you should only see two theme choices: BuddyPress Default Member Theme (1.0.1)–this is the one you want–and, Skeleton BuddyPress Member Theme (1.2).

Choose the Default Member Theme and save your selection. Try visiting your site once again.

    Hempsworth-

    Well, that is good news!

Sometimes FTPing WPMU can cause permission issues. That is why some recommend that you upload the WPMU zip package and unzip it on your server.

The issue is that files are owned by the FTP user which is not an issue for most people as that user is the same as your domain server user–your hosting account admin user. If you authenticate when using FTP and it is the same username and password that you use when authenticating your hosting account, then it should not be an issue. If you’ve set up a separate FTP user, then that could be the issue. With WPMU unzipped, each file that gets FTPed will have the wrong user/group name.

Anyway, If you feel that your issue is resolved, then please set the light to green on top.

    @Hempsworth

Did you see my question here In this post?

Are you saying that instead of those two themes showing up in the "BuddyPress > General Settings" menu area that you have the home themes you've listed above?

Since there is now an assumption that you are having the same issue as honewatson has described, we need an answer. Until then, we should not assume that the two issues are related.

    @honewatson

As Burt has requested, we would like to see if there are any commonalities between your issue and Hempsworth’s issue. Web server (Apache, Lighty, Nginx), version of PHP, and WPMU install method (subdirectory or subdomain) would help us narrow this down a bit.

    @Windhamdavid

Actually Hempsworth must have mod_rewrite installed and loaded as his Lighty config file is properly rewriting his WPMU URLs. WPMU is functioning for him and since doing a clean reinstall of BuddyPress, he was able to activate it.

But now he has a different issue–a strange missing-theme files issue.

I just tried this on a test site of mine. Within the Basic field grouping, all fields, including radio button fields, are turned into links. Yep, radio button fields. Tell me how that makes sense. It grabs the text from the selected option field and displays that as a link. I can understand it display the text from the selected radio button, but turning that into a link makes no sense at all.

The linking occurs in other field groups as well, not just the basic field group.

I’ll look at the codebase tomorrow to see what’s going on. I think it is something in get_edit_html() that is causing this issue.

Well this is what I get in the list:

    WordPress Classic (1.5)

    WordPress mu Default (1.6)

    WordPress mu Homepage (1.6)

Are you sure that you’re looking in the proper spot? The theme list you provided is what you see when you go to “Site admin > Themes”. These are the themes from which you can choose your home theme.

To choose your member theme, you need to go to the BuddyPress menu grouping all the way down at the bottom of the menu column. So, as Burt indicated, you would go to “BuddyPress > General Settings > Select theme to use for BuddyPress generated pages”.

You choose the member theme from the combo box. With a default BP install you should only see two theme choices: BuddyPress Default Member Theme (1.0.1)–this is the one you want–and, Skeleton BuddyPress Member Theme (1.2).

Are you saying that instead of those two themes showing up in the “BuddyPress > General Settings” menu area that you have the home themes you’ve listed above?

The latest version (v1.2.1) of the Skeleton Component for BuddyPress plugin developers can now be found on the WordPress plugin repository

Just so we can say we tried this:

    1. Please delete BuddyPress from the plugins folder. You can keep the bphome and bpmember themes in their proper places.
    2. Then deactivate all other plugin
    3. Log out of WPMU and clear your browser’s cache
    4. Redownload BuddyPress
    5. Remove the themes folder from the download as it is not needed–you already have the themes installed (we’ll assume for now that they are in good shape)
    6. Upload BuddyPress to /wp-content/plugins/
    7. Optional Step: Go outside and turn in a counterclockwise circle three time. Circumference of circle is not relevant.
    8. Fire up WPMU, log in as site admin and go to the plugins menu
    9. If it is visible, try activating it sitewide

    Let me know what happens

    Okay, several more questions?

Did you manually install BuddyPress or use WPMU’s plugin browser to install BP?

Did you restart the web server after making changes to the rewrite rules in the configuration file?

In your OP, you state that you have moved the bphome theme into /wp-content/themes/. Did you also move bpmember into /wp-content/bp-themes/?

Also, look near the bottom of this installing WPMU codex article for suggestions on Lighty rewrite rules: https://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WPMU

You need to learn more about CSS, specifically how to float and position elements. Here are a few resources to get you started:

    http://css.maxdesign.com.au/floatutorial/

    http://www.brainjar.com/css/positioning/

Also, I highly recommend that you use Firefox with the Firebug Add-on.

Here’s an article on how to create custom BuddyPress slugs. Perhaps this will help: https://buddypress.org/blog/how-to/customizable-slugs-in-buddypress/

Well, we really don’t have enough information about your environment to specifically offer assistance. Here are a few questions to get this started:

    1. Which version of Lighty are you running?
    2. Which version of WPMU are you running?
    3. Did you install WPMU as a directory or subdomain install?
    4. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory
    5. Was WPMU functioning properly before installing BuddyPress?
    6. What permalink structure do you have setup in WPMU?
    7. Which version of BuddyPress (BP) are you running?
    8. Please provide a list of any errors in your server’s log files.

Also, how much experience do you have with installing and configuring Lighty? I ask this because I’m guessing that your issue is more than likely a server configuration issue having to do with permalink rewriting.

Was WPMU functioning properly before you tried installing and activating BuddyPress? In other words, could you create posts? Did they show up on the default WPMU theme? Could you navigate to them when clicking on their link? Did you receive any errors? You should not attempt to install BuddyPress until your WPMU setup is functioning perfectly.

People successfully run WPMU on LightTPD and Nginx web serving platforms. These two platforms do not support, do not use, .htaccess files. They cannot use .htaccess files. But, they can be configured to properly rewrite permalinks. The .htaccess file is not essential, not required, for WPMU to run properly. What is required is a facility to rewrite permalinks.

Do you have two different accounts on bp.org? :)

As far as the redirect loop question, it could be caused by many things. So, a few questions:

    1. Did you install WPMU as a directory or subdomain install?
    2. If a directory install, is it in root or in a subdirectory?
    3. You were having install issues beforehand. When you finally got this to work, could there have been old, incomplete install data leftover in your DB? Or, did you install into a fresh, new DB?
    4. What errors are you seeing in your server’s log files?

I did a quick Google and here are two links that explain a couple of possible causes:

So this only appears to happen in the Admin user’s profile fields. Okay, a few more questions:

    1. What happens if you delete the “blah” data, save the emptied out field, and then reenter some data in that same field?
    2. What happens if you create a new text field and try entering data? Does it also create links?
    3. What happens if you delete that field then recreate it and enter data?

    johnetec-

I’m really not too sure what options you have at this time. But, I would strongly suggest that you contact each of the plugin developers and let them know of the issues you’ve had with uploading and cropping avatars in BuddyPress.

WordPress 2.8 will be using an updated version of jQuery. This may very well cause issues with plugins using older jQuery based scripts. Also, BuddyPress could be using a newer jQuery codebase than the plugins that you’ve mentioned. So, this issue will continue until the plugins are updated to a jQuery codebase that is compatible with BuddyPress.
