@henrywright not yet no, but like you said there vps servers are very good for the price, they have some real good deals on dedicated servers with real decent hardware. the quad core @3.4ghz with Intel® Xeon® E3-1270 v3 plus and 16gb ddr3 and two 1tb hardrives with raid 1 is so damn cheap at £50 per month compared to other hosting services, plus this includes plesk with the package!
this is why im upgrading next month
your looking at least double that price with most other hosting companys for them specs plus they offer you full managed on top if you want for no extra cost!!lol im confused? what you mean? buddypress in Appearance > Menus?
are you trying to create a custom menu in wordpress? all you have to do is name the menu then on the left handside tick the pages you want to appear in this menu, then under the menu you have created you will see these options.
Menu Settings
Auto add pages
Automatically add new top-level pages to this menuTheme locations
Primary MenuTick primary menu option then save and your menu will appear how you want it
In reply to: Permalink Structure@henrywright lol henry ive just tried it again in my my wp-config.php and it seems to be working now, this is first time ive tried it again in my wp-config.php since moving to this vps so all is good 🙂 , dunno why it wouldnt work on my shared hosting before? wiered.
so @jaynm26 you could allways add this to your wp-config.php if you feel comfortable putting it in there instead of bp-custom.php (because this does not work for me), maybee it will work for you in ther i dunno?
dont forget if you add the code put it above this line close to the bottom
/* That’s all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */
hope this helps.
In reply to: Permalink StructureI’m actually about to move over to my 1&1 VPS so will try to report back what I find. I’m pretty sure I’ve used root profiles on it before without problems.
yer defo letme know pal, i moved over to the 1&1 vps as hostgator shared was so so bad for performance, im happy with the speed and performance of this vps so much so ive decided to go for full dedicated next month with them.
In reply to: 2.0 top features – ideas@henrywright i agree with you on that definitely, but adding some functionality that some plugins offer as built into buddypress would also help because your adding less weight from these plugins too no?
In reply to: Permalink Structure@henrywright nope nothing that would effect it, because i can even install a fresh wordpress and buddypress install then create a new bp-custom.php and add the code and they still wont work, this has been the same way for 12 months and on 2 different linux servers, the first one was on shared hosting with hostgator so should of been no problem with config of server, and ive now just upgraded to a 1&1 vps, and the same thing applies, next month im upgrading to full dedicated for launch and would hope to have root profiles activated for this time, but like i said im hitting a brick wall with this code??
oh and by the way i dont use multisite
In reply to: Permalink Structureit really doesnt matter where in the code it is because even if i have nothing in bp-custom.php
and place the code between the php tags directly it still doesnt work for me, like i said ive been adding and removing code to bp-custom.php for the past twelve months without a problem, its just root profiles that is the only code i cannot get to work.In reply to: Permalink Structure@henrywright yo henry, this confuses me because this option never works for me on any of my buddypress installs?
define ( ‘BP_ENABLE_ROOT_PROFILES’, true );
ive put this in bp-custom plenty of times but it never actually does anything all my links remain the same, yes my bp-custom.php is in my plugins folder and all the other tweaks in there work fine?
so why doesnt this work for me?
doesnt even work when i add it directly to my wp-config.php either btw
this is also the case on fresh installs of wordpress with default themes, never can seem to get users to show as root??@matthewhout Hmm, buddypress settings are located in the settings submenu in wordpress dashboard, make sure you turn on all the options you need in there, also make sure your pages are setup in there as you want them to, also dont forget to go to settings and permalinks too, and select which permalinks you prefare, hopefully everything should be fine for you then, well if i understand correctly that the issues you where having was due to having a windows server and now you have changed to a linux server? i cant see there being any problems with a fresh install.
First question would be to ask if your on shared hosting vps or private server?
maybee this link will help you if you take a look. i dont know what hosting your with but have a read anyhows.
https://wordpress.org/support/topic/godaddy-iis-and-removing-indexphp-in-urlp.s i dont know if there is a solution within that post but it may help you find out a little more.
also just found this post too for you.
https://wordpress.org/support/topic/getting-rid-of-indexphp-from-url
@granville Hmm its wiered you should say that, i had that thought in the back of my mind too. i suppose sometimes people dont sit back and think that something could be up (me included).
I hope the guys ok if there is indeed something up, but we can only speculate.
It does seem odd to me why all the comments in support have been ignored after a release only weeks before??In reply to: 2.0 top features – ideaspersonally i like seeing the first few replies left in an activity comment, this decides if i want to keep reading further comments or not and may lead to me commenting on it myself. i think the show more option is better than having to click to expand the comments before reading any at all.
In reply to: 2.0 top features – ideas1. Event integration would be great, including inviting people to an event and being able to mark as attending not attending etc for users.
2.More privacy options on public groups such as being able to stop them from showing in the activity stream altogether but still allowing people to join without requesting.
3.Option to turn on some form of automatic activity refresh (for those people who have dedicated servers with good resources)
4.Privacy in general, being able to set your profile to public private or friends only etc.
5.Notifications to show avatars.
In reply to: stop public groups posting to the activity stream?@shanebp ty again shane, i still have not had the chance to try this, but im defo gonna get round to it in the next hour lol, so from reading that article i would make a buddypress folder in my twenty twelve child theme then add an activity folder inside it, then i should copy the activity-loop.php from the directory you specified. and then i would perform the edit you mentioned above? is this correct? just making sure im clear on what to do before doing it.
or should i just copy the entire buddypress directory over from \bp-templates\bp-legacy\buddypress\ to my child theme before making the edit?
i havent needed to do anything as of yet with buddypress template files you see as all other edits i have made have been in the functions.php and bp-custom.php
In reply to: stop public groups posting to the activity stream?Hey @shanebp ty for your response, i have just woke up and read this and will be trying it in the next hour, i will update you on if this solved my problem or not.
Create a template overload of this file:
\bp-templates\bp-legacy\buddypress\activity\activity-loop.phpi assume by this you mean copy this file over to my child twenty twelve theme and make the edits specified in there?
hi matthew, maybee you could you explain a little more?
All my pages are messed up, the links are all screwy and bunch of other stuff.
ive looked at your link and everything seems perfectly normal on the twenty fourteen theme, i notice you havent got buddypress installed?
go to plugins and click add plugins and search for buddypress, then go to buddypress settings and tick what you will want to be using within your website, i would also suggest doing a search for rtmedia plugin for your photos. dunno if this helps as i cant see what you mean with all the links being screwy etc when buddypress isnt even installed?In reply to: stop public groups posting to the activity stream?found this section in the bp-groups-activity.php
this seems to relate to the public groups, does anyone have any ideas on what to change here?// Set the default for hide_sitewide by checking the status of the group
$hide_sitewide = false;
if ( !empty( $args[‘item_id’] ) ) {
if ( bp_get_current_group_id() == $args[‘item_id’] ) {
$group = groups_get_current_group();
} else {
$group = groups_get_group( array( ‘group_id’ => $args[‘item_id’] ) );
}if ( isset( $group->status ) && ‘public’ != $group->status ) {
$hide_sitewide = true;
}
}$r = wp_parse_args( $args, array(
‘id’ => false,
‘user_id’ => bp_loggedin_user_id(),
‘action’ => ”,
‘content’ => ”,
‘primary_link’ => ”,
‘component’ => buddypress()->groups->id,
‘type’ => false,
‘item_id’ => false,
‘secondary_item_id’ => false,
‘recorded_time’ => bp_core_current_time(),
‘hide_sitewide’ => $hide_sitewide
) );return bp_activity_add( $r );
}i have tried changing the $hide_sitewide = false; to $hide_sitewide = true;
but this doesnt work properly.In reply to: stop public groups posting to the activity stream?im looking through the bp-groups-activity.php am i in the right area?
hmm nevermind the above post after re-reading it i have realised that line 62 is to reflect the name i give the function, but i still cant get it to work, i will explain what steps ive taken please tell me if im doing it wrong…
i have renamed this bit at the top
// begin record products to BP activity stream
function product_record_activity( $post_id, $post, $user_id = false ) {renamed it from…. function product_record_activity …. to this…… function test_test_test
am i right so far?
next i have renamed this on line 19…
/* Don’t record this if it’s a regular post */
if ( $post->post_type != ‘product’ ) return false;and where it says ‘product’ i added my custom post type name…… am i still right?
then on line 28 this bit…
$activity_action = sprintf( __( ‘%1$s added or updated the product %2$s, in the store:
i change the added or updated the product and in the store to whatever text i want……. am i still doing it right?
then the last step at the bottom i change line 62 to the name i made earlier which was function test_test_test
so am i still right?
then i upload the buddypress custom php to my plugins folder via my ft p….. i then go and check my site and post something in my custom post and guess what? nothing happens!
now i dont understand what im doing wrong and if this code still works or not? if it doesnt could you please give us your current solution please prometheus? or if im doing something wrong will someone please tell me? because i can get the code @neo-tronic pasted above to work perfectly and show custom post types fine in the activity stream when posting in my custom posts…but the thing is with that code is it does’nt let users comment on the post from the activity stream?
can someone please help me out here ….ty 🙂
Hi THERE, @prometheus-fire sorry for pulling you back to this thread but i am trying to implement the code snippet you posted thats working for you, now i understand exactly what to do until i get to this part…
– Line 62 to reflect the name of the function you created for your CPT
im not sure what the function is called for my custom post types, the custom post types i am trying to get to show in the activity stream was created by a plugin, now looking through the php files of this plugin it has lots of functions, how would i know which function it is i am meant to add on line 62?
i may be overlooking something simple?
In reply to: HELP ON USING A BUDDY PRESS THEME!@hnla i know this thread is going off topic now and the original question was resolved so you can mark this as resolved if you want, i have figured it all out now ty anyhows hugo, 2 days of reading has paid off i suppose even though i felt i was getting nowhere at times so once again thx for your earlier help 🙂
@shanebp @catwomanbadkitty hey shane or catwoman or anyone else that reads this could you please tell me where i would add this code in my child theme as i really need this function too. or what file would i need to add to my child theme to do this, ty
In reply to: HELP ON USING A BUDDY PRESS THEME!@hnla hi again hugo i think it might be better if i tell you exactly why i want to use the bp-default theme, you know when someone creates a new post when using the bp-default theme and next to that post it shows the users avatar and a link with there name? well when you click there name it takes you straight to that users activity/profile , well i really need that as part of my theme and i dont know how to recreate it in another theme otherwise i would implement it in my own theme, i have attached an image below so you can see what i mean, this gives you an idea of what i need my buddypress to work like, this is the most important thing i need from using bp-default. it may explain to you why im so keen to use bp-default
In reply to: HELP ON USING A BUDDY PRESS THEME!@hnla ok ty again hugo for responding, still figuring this out, so your saying if i copy all of the above files and add this code to my functions.php i can then run my child theme as a full theme and edit it to my hearts content without worrying about future updates of buddypress effecting my theme??
also just to clarify that i will be copying the correct folders over i need to ask if i am copying the correct folders with all the files needed via ftp, so if i ftp and go to wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-templates/ i then come to a folder called bp-legacy is this the folder i should copy and add to my chid theme or should i copy the folders or files within this folder as it contains all the files above you mentioned, then i would add a functions.php to my child theme and add the code you gave? am i correct?
im sorry if this is a pain for you to explain to me, its just i am intent on learning all this stuff and unless i get this bit right first i wont be able to progress, i am one of those people who finds it easier to sit and learn things visually in the sense that if i see it done once it all becomes clear to me, everything i learn the majority of the time is through video tuts.i do read alot too but sometimes get stuck picturing exactly what is being explained, if you remember a while back when i had a problem removing my header from buddypress pages only i knew what it was i should of been doing and had the right idea of where i should of been doing it but couldn’t visualise it until modemlooper helped me see it clearly, then it just clicked and i went and did it because of his help, my stronger points you see are css and design and as long as i can get this bit right to start working on my theme and researching what functions etc i want to change in my theme i cant change anything 🙂
In reply to: HELP ON USING A BUDDY PRESS THEME!@hnla ok hugo ty for your info and help, i think im understanding your meaning now, this is the first time that ive worked with the bp-default theme you see, even though i do realize you are no longer supporting it in the future i want to use it for my next project as i like the layout to start from, ive just been over and read about theme compatibility buddypress offers, the last time i was using buddypress was with the template pack you see.
so let me get this straight after i create a bp-default child theme say if i want to make changes to the members activity.php would i be correct in thinking i would make a folder called members and add a blank activity.php into that folder in my child theme? or would i copy the activity.php located in plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/members folder and add that to my child theme for editing?
