    @sbaglia i too would like to achieve this but have been so busy with doing other things that i have not even looked at how or if this could be done yet, so i +1 this request if anyone has any info on how to do this? it would be awesome if users received notification on blog post comments or for me especially custom post type comments. to me this would infact give complete social network functioning throughout my entire site this way and not just on the buddypress pages.

    Im not 100 percent if this is exactly what you was asking to do as the link to the page you gave is throwing a 404 page out so i cannot see exactly what space you wanted to create and where so i just assumed you are meaning the space between each update in the stream.

    @mcpeanut

    @irieside do you want to create more space between each activity update? if so add this code to your custom css file.

    ul#activity-stream li.activity-item {
    margin-bottom: 10px !important;

    (change the 10px to whatever you want) this will add spacing between activity items.

    Haha , After reading this back my question probably looks confusing lmao, im sorry i was a little drunk when i posted it, i was chilling out with a few beers at the time, it doesnt matter now anyhows as i have solved the problem myself by using the brilliant plugin bowe codes which allows me to do exactly what i was looking for. you can mark this as resolved.

    you need to read up about scaling wordpress and not just buddypress tbh, i have been doing a good bit of research on the matter recently, there is alot to it! I suggest as henry and shane says, you need to create a good infastructure of servers, i would suggest getting a setup where you can have one server running as a dedicated database server independently whilst having a few other servers for specific tasks within the network such as file servers and firewalls etc, there are solutions out there but they can be costly and you will need to be a dab hand with linux to pull it off as a one man team, maybe the best way to deal with these issues is first get to the point where you will need to worry about doing it, if you had that sort of regular users within your website im sure you could hire a team to do it with the revenue it would generate if setup right.

    @mmaccou i have been experimenting with the early release of mediapress created by brajesh at buddydev and it is a very promising plugin and most of brejesh’s plugins are very good however i would say that it is not yet where it needs to be for use on a live site as he is working hard to make it more complete but i have faith that it will be the best media plugin when its finished and not in the beta stages

    i myself would try rtmedia for the free version for now if it works for you because i have tried every single media plugin and none are really that great at the minute, activity plus is an awesome plugin but for some reason the guys at wpmu dev do not see the need even though many many many people have already asked about them including a gallery so that the images the user posts in the stream or in a group are linked to a user and they dont just get lost in the stream forever like they do now, why they dont add this feature is beyond me tbh?

    i cannot use rtmedia myself even though i would do if i could, because it clashes with a custom plugin i have that i need and both the rtmedia team and my plugin dev cant fix the issue between them lol so its one or the other

    i was using buddydevs other media plugin that is paid for bpgallery which i cannot recommend even though it was a brilliant plugin it stops working on the latest buddypress and i think brajesh hasnt updated it due to working on mediapress to replace it, i do have another plugin that i have been helping test out that noone else has got due to it being discontinued but i have been helping a dev test it while he fixes it bits at a time and this even includes tagging, but again its not ready for a live site release, its so frustrating about the lack of fully functional media plugins and i hear ya, i know there is a frk of buddypics by modemlooper that also works quite well but again its very limited in what it can do, hope this helps you a little and saves you the time i have spent looking for solutions that i am not yet 100 percent happy with but have to make do with for now πŸ™‚

    @hami007 best thing to do would be scrap the free hosting for a start as when errors like this occur you may find you are limited in what you can do to troubleshoot issues, like hugo said it sounds like you need to check all your plugins 1 by 1 as a starting point then i would at least look into some cheap basic hosting rather than free, there are some great deals on shared hosting around that are really really cheap but to be honest running wordpress and buddypress on shared hosting further down the line will probably end up failing you due to restrictions and overuse of the server etc etc, at least look into getting an half decent vps server to start off with and learn the basics of server maintenance before moving on to the likes of dedicated servers etc though, i jumped straight from shared to dedicated and found myself lost and at mercy to linux as a novice user, so i decided to take 8 months time out and learn everything about linux server hardening and security i could alongside the correct way to set everything up for running multiple wordpress websites etc etc, it all sounds daunting at first but if you stick with it or at least move away from free hosting it will be worth it with time and effort. just a little advice for you before looking for a real hosting solution as i kinda jumped into the deep end, as i have read so many stories of people who went and got a good deal on a dedicated server etc that didnt have a clue how to use it but found themselves in a 12 month contract, luckily i wanted to spend the time learning myself so it paid off for me.

    @r-a-y Yes mate, you have summarized it correctly.

    May i add one other important note though, this has NOT just started happening, this has been happening in buddypress since i started using it in 1.9!

    I have been mentioning this issue for a while , i have tested this on 3 different live servers and a home setup using desktopserver, all with fresh installs of wordpress and buddypress alone (NO OTHER PLUGINS EVERYTIME), How many times have i tested since 1.9? well lets say its gotta be at least 100 fresh installs of wordpress all with default themes since wordpress 3.7 ish.

    if you want to go look for yourself there is a perfect example of this happening at buddyboss demo theme if you log in and hit the load more button then add over 5 comments to a test status then refresh it and scroll down and hit load more again, you can do this here where you will then notice they are not collapsed .

    @danbp yes thats what i was saying about it not being theme or plugin specific as a problem because you can create this no matter what install of bp you are using.

    If you haven’t receive the answer you expected, it’s because the described issue is not a issue, but how it works globally

    in otherwords you mean you all know about this and just cannot figure out how to stop this behavior from happening within buddypress yet after clicking the load more tab, sorry to be blunt lol but its quite obvious that this is the case, because then comes the question of why the collapsing of comments was added in the first place within buddypress if it can only work on the first 50 activity updates until clicking the load more button.

    i do not believe for a second that this was added with the intent of it not working when scrolling down and clicking the load more button, because as anyone who uses any kind of social network knows ” WE ALL SCROLL DOWN AND READ OLDER COMMENTS” especially if we havent logged in for a day or two.

    look i am not complaining about using free software that other people have spent countless hours and dedicated all there time to make it what it is, to be honest it is utterly brilliant and i thank everyone involved because without buddypress i wouldnt be able to achieve what my site can do, all i am saying is that it is a very troublesome feature the way it works right now and i think it really should be addressed. (if the feature was added to collapse comments after 5 for the first 50 status updates you see only then fine, but like i said i dont believe that for a second. its more like its an issue that has not been solved.

    this is why i have now added my own solution for now by adding a collapse and expand comments button for anyone to use after they have clicked the load more button, and if anyone wants help doing that i will give them the code.

    @mcpeanut

    Participant

    this is why i have now had to implement an expand and collapse comments button next to each status update so users can collapse statuses with alot of comments then expand them when they want to read them!

    @danbp do you not remember talking to me about this very issue a week or 2 ago in a post?

    this is the exact same issue i am talking about, its not theme or plugin specific it happens on any fresh and new buddypress install without any plugins running at all and with all the default themes, i have extensively tested with numerous fresh installs.

    as i mentioned in that thread this is a very troublesome problem, why on earth dont a few devs just check out this problem by just installing buddypress with a fresh wordpress install then post about 40-50 dummy status updates in the stream and then about 10 from the bottom add over say 7 comments then another 10 statuses up add another 7 comments and finally add another seven comments to near the top.

    now after doing that go and refresh the page and you will find that the first 7 comments you see in the closest status to the top will only show 5 of the 7 and an option saying show all comments will appear (how they should be), then scroll down to the load more button and click it and notice the statuses after you click the load more button show all 7 comments instead of hiding after 5!!!!!! (7 is used as an example so imagine if 30 comments have been made on a status! makes the activity stream very loooooooooooooooooong!

    this takes me on average less than 5 minutes to replicate every single time from a fresh install, the reason most of you are not seeing it is because i think you are not testing past 5 or more comments!

    @ChiefAlchemist I agree with alot of what you said above, however i havent tested 2.1 yet as im still on 2.0.3, i am a little bit wary of updating at the min after reading various problems already cropping up for people. but surely the best way around this would be to let the new @ mentions only show users friends?

    I mean if you could only show friends when mentioning someone then the admin account would never be visible to anyone unless the admin started adding friends lol, if you wanted to mention someone that was not your friend you would have to just type ther full username? what do you think?

    Infact i would prefare it only to visibly show my friends when mentioning someone instead of the whole site members lol, this way if you was mentioning someone that wasnt a friend you would have to know exactly who you wanted to mention like i just did with you.

    so to sum up what i just said.
    1. auto suggest should only show friends
    2. mentioning someone outside of you friends should require you to know exactly who you wanted to mention

    @danbp @henrywright i think i have found a solution! took alot of hours searching for this, but i have found some code (function) that adds a new button to each activity allowing you to toggle the comments to collapse and expand throughout buddypress.

    I am going to spend some time testing this tonight and will share the fix later if i dont run into any problems with it, maybe this could be made into a plugin? , obviously the credit for this is not mine and belongs to the guy who figured this out, i have just found the code:) and altered it a little, i have it working now and all seems fine i will try it out on a few different themes first.

    @danbp please read my last post again i have edited it to read a little better, and hopefully it explains better,i have to stop lazy typing, slaps himself.

    @mcpeanut

    @danbp i didnt hide the activity comments myself even though i know you can change the number visible if you wanted but im happy with default of 5 showing.

    buddypress automatically hides more than 5 comments anyway and if say 10 comments have been made a link will appear saying show all 10 comments, you then click it and it expands them.

    thats what i am saying, it works fine until you scroll down to previous updates with comments made above 5, by clicking the load more button at the bottom of activity this stops working.

    instead of seeing the link that says show all 10 comments you just see the 10 comments or 20 comments allready expanded , is that a little clearer? you can both go and test it on buddypress install within a few minutes and you will see what i mean? no

    @mcpeanut

    hey @henrywright ok but before i do could you confirm this is not the default behaviour?
    because im baffled as to whether it actually worked in the first place now lol, or was i imagining it? lol

    @mcpeanut

    Update! ok ive been that frustrated with this i have just been over to the buddyboss demo theme and logged in as test user to see if it was happening there to, and guess what? same problem!

    Now i think i am either going mad or this feature was never in buddypress and only hides more than 5 comments on the first page of activity updates? i could of swore it used to work for me after clicking load more? am i going mad or what guys? any feedback will be appreciated, and if indeed this is normal behaviour for buddypress then all i can ask is why?

    surely something like this should of been adressed ages ago, i know you guys have been working on the speed and queries etc which is outstanding work πŸ™‚ but what about all these little details that need adressing? there is no such plugin to help with this issue, and surely it would be great to also have collapsable and expanding comments so you can collapse them again?
    the commenting system is very awkward if there is alot of people commenting.

    who really likes to scroll through a couple of hundred comments on one post if its not interesting to them? does anyone have a fix for this in any form? @henrywright do you have any takes on this pal?

    @henrywright hey henry sorry for the delay in responding, i have only just noticed this post, yes i can also confirm and would not advise anyone to go for the managed packages, i went for the quad core xeon @3.5ghz dedicated server package with 1tb raid 1 and 16gb ddr3 ram unmanaged option, this server is lightning fast and i am very happy with it, i have signed up for their ssl certificate plan too because my server plan is for 24 months to bring the monthly cost down, so to me it makes sense to go for there ssl package too, i even manged to get them to set it all up for free and got my first month free πŸ™‚ , i know this is a big commitment to sign up for 24 months but i really think the specs i went for will be enough for this period, saying all this though about the managed server option i also would NOT recommend anyone without good knowledge of linux and apache/centos trying to setup a dedicated server until they have used at minimum a vps or similar for a while first, some people seem to think they can jump from a shared hosting environment to a dedicated server and quite often get confused as of how to securely set up their server, things like locking down your ssh, creating banners and setting up firewalls etc can be a daunting task for the ones less knowledgeable with linux from the command line, one other thing to note with 1&1 is the way that the partitions are set initially, you will find that you will need to allocate much more drive space to your partitions when first setting up your server by expanding them because they only have 4gb allocated to each partition when you first use it.
    i hope this helps anyone who reads it and is thinking of going down the dedicated route for buddypress.

    I am thinking about writing a basic server hardening tutorial and first steps to take when i have got the time, if anyone would be interested in a tutorial about what steps to take when getting a dedicated server for the first time let me know, i will see what i can do.

    @henrywright yes i realize its a 24 month contract with them that’s why they keep there prices low, i suppose its not to bad them leaving out the sll certificates from the pricing because they throw in plesk for free, (swings and roundabouts).

    im opting in for the 24 month contract on the xeon because you arent tied to that contract if you want to upgrade (they will upgrade your package if needed which is great), i searched and thought about it long and hard before deciding this which i think you have to before making any 24 month contract, like i said im real happy with there vps so cant see there being problems with there dedicated servers, as allways with any hosting company most of the complaints ive read are with there shared hosting, but hey you get what you pay for i suppose huh :), keep me informed bro, thx

    ha just read that back, excuse my lazy typing im tired tonight lol

    btw i just registered on your website without a problem to test it for you and it is indeed going to my spam folder as i mentioned.

    also after logging in i also noticed you have wordpress set up as a multisite installation, is there any reason you have done this? are you planning having a multisite setup?

    @mcpeanut

    @matthewhout lol matthew dont worry man we was all noobs at some point :), regarding the emails have you checked the spam folder? sometimes wordpress mails go to the spam folders, best thing to do is configure your mail to go through smpt (i guess you also wont be familiar with this either?)

    if you want help i may have a little time spare to help you set it up initially, are you on skype? you can add me if you want.

    if not set a free skype account up and post me your username and i will add you, i can help you out a little if you want seeing as your struggling setting up the basics.

    @henrywright oh if you are also looking at the cheaper package that has an 8 core atom cpu, i would defo pay the extra for the quad core xeon, even though the 8 core is quite decent for an atom based processor its designed for low energy consumption and i think the 4 core xeon defo as an edge over it in many ways!

    oh and i can tell you through experience that that cpu is quite a good cpu, i had one in my home rig at one point and it was an awesome cpu.

    i do quite alot of cpu benchmarking etc as im a bit of a technology geek and it performs well in all tests for its pricerange
