In reply to: BP 2.2 also broke Q&A Plug-In
Hmm, it sounds harsh that you get burned and have problems on each update because ive not really had many problems when updating in the past, maybe a few small ones but not many, and if i have had a few problems ive just held off updating for a couple of weeks until the fixes have been issued into buddypress or the plugins.
After trying out “ALOT” of themes (paid and free) with buddypress and wordpress over the past 2 years i have made my own conclusion that the best themes to use in both cases are usually the bare bones and lightweight themes that can have things integrated by yourself as and when needed, this way you are cutting out alot of problems that can be caused within the theme itself, i know some themes look amazing but they can also cause alot of problems for you in the future if not regular updated by the developer.
If your comfy with design i would always opt for a lightweight and barebones theme and build upon that. less things built into a theme = easier to troubleshoot! (This is just my opinion)
I have tried numerous themes that have caused wiered things to happen with certain plugins, yet work fine on the default themes for example.As for setting up a local test server, this is quite easy to do now, you should definitely look into using something like XXAMP and give it a try.
I still havent got round to testing the new buddypress update yet on my themes and plugins as i fell asleep lol.
In reply to: BP 2.2 also broke Q&A Plug-In@scaffies it seems your having a hard time since the new update with the amount of posts about what has broke, ive got a good few test sites setup on my other computers that all run different plugins so i will test this new update with about 100 different plugins on different themes and sites over the weekend and see if anything breaks with any of these plugins too, what theme do you use? and have you tested the plugins together on default themes too to make sure its not just theme specific?
Like mentioned in another thread i really think you should test any major update with your current plugins on a test server to check out what may or may not of broken, this way you can report the issues to either the buddypress devs or plugin authors and wait for them to catch up or apply a quik fix until they do. I might actually test one of my dev sites tonight that is running 40 plugins to see what happens.
infact scrap my last comment about it being so bad its actually good! after browsing around it more its absolute genious! It is comedy gold! especially the video tutorial of how to use the website lmao.
sorry we are going off topic now but couldnt help myself with @danbp posting that link, hahaha
Ive been sat here rolling on the floor at that website @danbp, Its so bad its actually good!
So funny if you refresh the page a different singer starts everytime lol, lets think about it really, how much time and effort he spent making it look that crazy! lolIn reply to: How to Add Member Images to on Profile Page@sbrajesh hi there, mediapress is an awesome plugin but have you managed to get the light box functional and working correctly yet with mediapress? because this is the only issue i can see with mediapress after testing it on my install, the commenting system in the lightbox is all screwy and just doesnt work like it does on rtmedias plugin, the way it adds extra activity items etc when someone comments just does not seem right, they should appear under the original post like rtmedia and facebooks lightbox does. like i said neat plugin but needs some improvements in this area bud.
maybe @shanebp is on the right track but i have an idea, seeing as you want to make it stand out more than just text do as shane said and add a 1px border #be3631; , so you are still makeing a statement!
@johnjamesjacoby well if it was me personally i would either tone the color of red down slightly, but i think the better idea in this case may be to make the topic titles themselves a darker red to match more in with the background color of these links, so that the attention isnt taken from the categories (because putting a background behind them is enough of a statement anyhows) whilst staying in tune with the eye. (but you may not be happy with this if trying to keep in tune with the buddypress color)
either way its down to you i can only suggest to you. as it stands in my opinion the boldness of the color behind the link sort of makes the topic titles less visible.
Edit: After looking again maybe just try a few shades lighter so the eye sees it as the same color of the titles. or you could even lighten the color of the background and add a 1px border a darker red around it.
@shanebp yes indeed i was talking about them very links haha, man its driving me crazy as i spend most of my time browsing through the main page rather than in the actual sub forums as i like to read alot about everything, i keep getting distracted by the boldness of these links when trying to read the titles.
In reply to: Activity appear two times on activity streamOh i came across this issue in the past when trying out different themes, i cannot remember which theme it was that caused this for me but i did manage to solve it somehow but it was so long ago i just cannot remember, but it was definitely caused with a theme i tried and not buddypress, in the end i decided not to use that theme, so i would suggest finding a different theme first as @mercime said and if its the cause change to a diff theme unless you paid for it of course then make the issue known to the developer for a fix.
In reply to: How to assign a WP user role based on a registration@spiritix usually with any kind of members plugin you can restrict access per user level on a page or post basis and should have the option within that post or page to select what user level has access to it with a custom message and even a link pointing them to upgrading their account.
what membership plugin are you using? and im sorry im not familiar with restrict content pro or bbpress though as ive not used them, if your users get given the correct roles within wordpress after registration then the problem lies with one of these plugins or some kind of conflict is my guess, maybe try to track it down by deactivating all plugins and reactivating them separately.
In reply to: How to assign a WP user role based on a registration@youmin to explain it in detail all the steps i have taken to do it the way i have will take me a while to type out because it means using and altering code for 4 seperate plugins, tbh even if there is now an easier way to do it i dont think i would use it because after all the time ive taken setting it up this way i am really happy with how it all works on my website.
The plus side of doing it this way for me is having the ability to also have extra membership levels in the future that i could in-fact charge a fee for access to certain parts of my site or give them extra privileges or could even assign donators with extra privileges etc etc, the possibilities are endless for me the way its setup now, but it just takes time to set it all up.
like i said im really to busy to go into full detail at the minute due to finishing off all the bits and bobs before launching my website.
If you decide to take this route instead of the route your going all the clues are there for you in my earlier response, it depends on what you actually want to use the extra levels for i suppose and if you will make use of them. there are a number of free membership plugins about if you search but that will be down to your own personal preference on which to use, same goes with the other plugins i mentioned as there are numerous plugins for these tasks if you take this route.
In reply to: How to assign a WP user role based on a registrationHey @youmin and @spiritix i hear you both on this matter, after much testing myself on how to do this i have realized the best way to do this is via a few other plugins.
firstly i would recommend using a membership plugin and a plugin to create your own registration forms as well as a roles capability management plugin, you can then overide the buddypress registration process (but you will lose the ability of integrating the custom fields you create for the buddypress registration unless you tie them into your own registration forms)
but the way i got around this myself without the problem of having to tie them with my registration forms was to add a buddypress profile progression plugin so once they have registered they will see a notice in the header showing the percentage of the profile they have completed encouraging them to fill the fields in “you could even integrate it with an awards system the more they fill in” its up to you. (to me this works perfectly fine as i can still add as many buddypress fields as an when i want and have a simple registration process to boot).if you mess around with this idea you will see that assigning a user to a specific role does infact work with the right combo of plugins and effort, i know this seems a long haul work around but the way i have set it up works fine for me. i may go into more detail for you guys when i have more time and explain exactly how mine works. plus this way if you do decide to implement some kind of pay per view membership for higher levels in the future your ready to go!
In reply to: ive got cover photos for profiles working but…ok this is still at the top so im not bumping it again lol, this is just to let you know ive managed to fix the problem anyhows, it was sort of staring me in the face.
incase anyone else is wanting to achieve this please click the link to the other post as mentioned above and change the code to this.
<style type="text/css"> body.is-user-profile div#item-header{ background:url(<?php echo $image_url;?>); width: 100%; background-size: 100%; background-repeat: no-repeat; } </style>turns out all i had to do was add div#item-header to body.is-user-profile for it to work.
Sometimes i need to give myself a shlaap and drink some more coffee when im up all night trying to add a new feature, lack of sleep can do this too you! haha
Ty @r-a-y , ive since been to the forums and told the dev thanks for this detailed report, cheers again for taking a look at this issue bud.
In reply to: ive got cover photos for profiles working but…sorry im not bumping this post as its already at the top i forgot to mention @timvango who originally gave the answer in the linked thread to see if he could help shed some light on this, oh and @peter-hamilton who has also managed to do this already on his website, ty for helping in advance guys if you can.
In reply to: please review my new website onlijn.com@peter-hamilton hey nice site peter it looks clean and not too crammed full of stuff and is easy to navigate, tbh i think you are on the right track, but maybe you could do with some kind of landing page explaining a little about your network and who you want to appeal to?
Also i love how you have done the groups section and can add a header image to each group as well as an avatar! Would you mind explaining how you did this? as i would like my groups to also have its own header images, have you used a plugin to add this feature?
@r-a-y Please read this ray, This also happens on twenty fifteen default theme, After trying numerous ways to try and troubleshoot this myself i have had no luck, and according to the moderators on Atahualpa forums due to my post there, they have spent hours figuring out the cause and have narrowed it down to a buddypress bug, one of the moderators has opened a bug ticket here https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/6153
@r-a-y yes i reckon that is the way to go with this theme, i cant try it now as im out of the house, i will let you know later if i resolve the issue, and once again cheers! 🙂
@r-a-y This is definitely only happening on Atahualpa, the problem is the moderators and users on the themes forum do not like to reply even though it has been read 70 times since i posted it and was approved by one of them, they have big bold writing at the top of the forum stating they will only answer questions off gold members who have donated more than 20 dollars.
If you have ever used this theme you will know it does things a little differently than other themes, dont get me wrong im all up for donating when i know the theme im working on is actually up to the job i need it to do for my current project, i don’t expect everything for free and have bought quite a few themes in the past etc and will donate once i know im going to actually use this theme for my final version. I mean this is more of a bug is it not? So to ignore a bug report rather than treat it as a question without giving an answer for all of its users and not just donators, i mean at least confirmation this bug will be addressed in another update would be welcomed, especially if its offered free on wordpress for download you would think they would give my post some acknowledgement at least. any-hows im not ranting on about how they operate their forums here lol and the moderators have helped alot of users over the years there as far as i can see , im more concerned about how i could fix this issue myself.
@youmin good idea but the problem with ata is it doesn’t even have a page.php im not sure if it uses index.php though, i will have a mess around with this idea, is anyone else familiar with this theme that could help me troubleshoot this?
In reply to: [INFO] Useful s2member/buddypress knowledge@hnla cheers for that, it will be a few weeks i think before i integrate s2members anyhows, i am currently finishing off the overall design of my theme and customizing every aspect of it and integrating alot of css changes to the way buddypress looks, so i will bookmark this page and refare back to it when i get round to s2member, i have learned so much over the past year and a half by visiting this site thx to you guys so cheers 🙂
In reply to: Break Space in Activity Stream Updates@irieside, Im sorry i still aint following you on what the exact space is you mean? can you post a screenshot with an arrow showing maybe?
I will take another guess anyhows, are you talking about the line height between the text in a status update? if so use this code
div.activity-inner p {
line-height: 1.4 !important;
}
change the 1.4 to whatever you want (dont change the 1.4 to say 2 though as the space will be to big! change it in increments like this 1.5 or 1.6 or 1.7 etc)I dunno if this helps you or not, if not try showing me via a screenshot and i will take a look.
@izzyian, I believe if you use the code above it will also remove the Whats new form from your main activity stream too! If you want to hide it from just the profile pages i suggest trying this code.
div#item-body form#whats-new-form {
display: none;
}Hope this helps
In reply to: [INFO] Useful s2member/buddypress knowledge@Myg0t Hi there, if you manage to integrate the fixes hugo and shane mentioned above would it be possible for you to post your updated code with the fixes implemented? Will save me a job further down the line as i plan on integrating the s2member plugin when ive finished on my current design layouts, will be much appreciated, cheers.
In reply to: Buddypress tabs !!I dont quite understand what you mean tbh about page refreshes when clicking a link or menu item? that is how web pages tend to work in general lol 🙂
However i do understand what you are saying about what you want to achieve, but you have to realize one thing first, if something doesnt work as your brain imagines it to work out of the box it does not mean you cannot make it work that way, as hugo said you should be really looking towards ajaxing certain parts of your website to acheive what you asked (you said you have no idea what ajaxing is yet you only need to type it in google to find out and read a few articles on what exactly ajaxing does to find out), ajaxing basically will let you do exactly what you are describing, you can read about it here https://codex.wordpress.org/AJAX
There are quite alot of wordpress ajax plugins around i have messed around with myself with mixed results when used with wordpress and buddypress, i suggest reading the link above then searching for a few ajax plugins and try them out for yourself 🙂
In reply to: Buddypress comment notification@sbaglia i really dont have a clue about this but ive just noticed a recent update on a plugin that adds seperate social networking functions to wordpress that i have been watching for a while, now the idea i had a while ago was wondering if this plugin could infact be ran alongside buddypress just for the comment notifications within wordpress, meaning i was wondering if all other notifications and workings of this other plugin could be disabled and used just for this one specific task, this way users would have a seperate notification system for blog and custom post comments, i really dont know as i have not messed around with them together but i know that this plugin does achieve what we want but seperately to buddypress, maybee you want to have a mess with the idea i had? i just dont have time at the minute and dont know if it will work well with buddypress running too, the plugin is here https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-notifications/
