    @buddypresslost i really appreciate the input your giving, the reason i said forget bandwidth for now is because the bandwidth fees can be set as a set price per month if you negotiate with the isp and give yourself plenty of room for excessive traffic spikes, the concern for me really is all about the storage and handling of the media itself.

    I will figure this out! haha, and i plan on creating a very good safety net for growth before i launch, the charging for media uploads is a good way of bringing the income in like you said , but are people willing to pay for uploading when lots of sites don’t charge, im not 100 percent convinced on this yet.

    I allready have a dedicated quad core zeon server with 32gb ddr3 ram and 4tb hardrives in raid, but this is why im thinking of getting 2 more and using 1 for load balancing, and one for a database server at first then i would plan on having 2 custom servers built just for media in a raid configuration, this would allow me to add another 20tb storage space cheaper than the cloud.

    I am trying to figure out this exact configuration yet but im now also questioning the cloud root before i commit to these purchases and task of setting all this up!

    Oh and to explain a little more to the people who are actively using media rich plugins within their buddypress sites they have just setup, ask yourself what will you do when you have no space left for users to upload files to? how will you tackle the situation? will you resort to deleting all your members previously posted media because no-one can post any more and your server crawls to a halt? or will you then take action by putting your site in the cloud and then face the way overpriced storage solutions offered by the cloud? and what if your site is not making enough to pay for the masses of media users are posting? without an advance solution this seems like alot of websites that allow media posting are setup to fail.

    Hope you guys are starting to understand why this question was asked now 🙂

    @buddypresslost hi there out of curiosity what about storage space and how is this charged to you via the cloud at rackspace?

    This is why i decided to abandon using the cloud and build a good old infastructure of servers, let me give you an example, what if your website is intended to be media rich with allowing posting of mp3s and video etc via plugins such as rtmedia = only as an example) how would you cope with the cost of having a never ending and expanding media library via the cloud?

    To me this is the biggest downfall the cost of storage in the cloud if users post lots and lots of media, i know its arguable about dedicated server costs each time you add another medi server but in this respect you can add tons and tons of storage to them alot cheaper (as long as you have them in a decent raid setup for backup purposes and failure), also you know the exact cost of adding extra hardware each time you do and you would only do it when its sustainable to do so.

    This is why i asked the question here, i am trying to get a few opinions in on the matter, i mean how would You cope with a media rich websites storage space when you cannot determine via the cloud just how much it will cost each month if your userbase grows and grows all posting media? it has to be stored somewhere.

    Anyone else got any advice on this before i commit to my next step?

    P.S can i please ask people who read this to forget about bandwidth use and traffic as a whole for the time being and help me concentrate on the media storage solution in terms of growth as a kind of what if situation? thx for any opinions in advance

    Hey @planetearthlings very good idea, i like it! I wish you guys the best with this project as it seems very ambitious, in regards to what you want to achieve i would look into plugins available such as buddypress gifts 2014 and mycred and maybe combining them together for the awards system you mentioned, maybe you could even have the plugins customized specifically for what you need.

    I am unsure how and what you intend to do about integrating a game and app system into use with buddypress, this seems like it could be a massive task to achieve and will no doubt give you a few headaches to overcome, i have sat back in the past and thought about how great it would be to have games and apps integrate with buddypress the way they do on other social networks such as fb.

    Like i said i wish you all the best in this project and im sure others can give you a few bits of input and ideas.

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/better-wp-security/ you could try this plugin im sure this plugin lets you rename it to a different url and key of your choice if i remember correctly.

    Meaning the plugin allows you to change yoursite.com/wp-admin/ and wp-login to a wording of your choice so only you and anyone you have told knows.

    HEY @ktrides2 dont settle for the top of the search box being cut off…like i said it was a guess at 35px but by looking at your website now i see you could do with an extra 10px down so take the code i gave you earlier and change the 35px to 45px that will stop the top being cut off.

    Glad it worked for you 🙂

    @mcpeanut

    @ktrides2 add this code to your child themes css

    form#search-members-form input {
    	display: inline-block !important;
    	position: relative !important;
    	top: 35px !important;
    }

    The 35px is a guess, so you may need to change this depending where it lands.

    This is easy to fix log into your cometchat admin panel http://www.yourwebsite.com/cometchat/admin then go to settings and then to the whos online tab and select show all online users to NO
    this will show only your friends in chat.

    @cometchat, this is why online support from people like yourselves suck, rather than give a straightforward answer right here right now you want to take the long route, because he will email support and they wont know you recommended him to email them then he will explain again, and your answer will most likely be, please give us admin rights to your server, rather than just tell him the answer!

    This seems to be a continuous problem for buddypress users and its a problem that crops up ALOT on these forums maybe there should be a sticky thread about this css button issue people are having with various themes and installs? It might stop this same question being asked over and over again by new users? I know it does not happen to everyone but it does happen on quite alot of themes and alot of people are confused how to initially fix this issue.

    @rosyteddy can i ask you a question? do you live on these forums? hehe. I thought i spent enough time knocking around here haha.

    @kissui after a brief search for you i came across this i aint sure if this can help about the resize issue you have http://stackoverflow.com/questions/26581807/how-to-prevent-a-specific-animate-from-running-via-a-seperate-jquery-script

    @utahman1971 hey man, sorry if it sounded rude, it was not meant to be! It was purely a suggestion or more of an idea for you to implement.

    I didn’t realize you wanted the notice to only be displayed within the activity stream itself, my suggestion was a valid suggestion meaning if you added a text widget area to one of your sidebars you could of then excluded it from showing from all pages but the buddypress members pages and or to logged in users only, meaning they would of had a permanent notice that was not close-able to them but was always in view to them depending where you placed it in the sidebar.

    I am sorry if it came across the way it did to you, but trust me i am not like that nor was i aware of the plugin that danbp gave you a link to.

    @utahman1971 hi there, i was reading your problem and i am a little confused to be honest!

    I mean if its a admin notice for all users, it should never be able to close for regular members. It should stick like a sticky thread in a forum.

    If you want a permanent notice to show without users being able to close it would it not be better to just add a text widget and add your own styling to make it stand out as a permanent reminder?

    @vanishsequence @aluxi33 Glad it worked for you both and aluxi dont worry man if you get things wrong at first i was the exact same when i came here a few years back and was struggling to understand where to add and edit code, it gets easier the more you read and start to mess around with code snippets etc, trust me ive had my fair share of frustrating head banging moments over the last few years trying to figure out things i needed to do. 🙂 tbh though most of the time i have spent has been learning about server hardening and server configuring on the linux side of things so most of the head banging moments have came from that lmao.

    @henrywright hey henry thx for the update, i still have not had full chance to use this plugin yet as i have had my head stuck into building some pretty complex search forms for the past few days for one of my none buddypress websites lol, which i wasn’t planning to do just yet, you know how it is 🙂 start one thing then end up doing something totally opposite! But i might even use this in one of my sites yet so i will definitely be trying it out at some point soon.

    While I appreciate your concern on the OP’s topic you should also be aware that most social network admins including the big ones you may be using have access to PM’s as well as IP’s and Internet Service Providers. If your that paranoid about who has access to your data then I suppose the best policy would be not to volunteer it by joining in the first place of course this is just my honest opinion.

    Hey bphelp i think you missread what i was getting at bro 🙂

    Maybe there should be better ways to give users moderator capability’s that doesn’t mean giving them full admin rights

    If you read the quote above from my reply i was talking about vitamincee having to have lots of admins on her site which is what i dont agree with just to do things buddypress related.

    If your that paranoid about who has access to your data then I suppose the best policy would be not to volunteer it by joining in the first place of course this is just my honest opinion.

    I have to agree with you on this, If a user joins your or any other site he or she has to accept the way it is run in my opinion. And i understand the network admin should be able to see everything that is going on throughout the site incase anything needs to be dealt with. I was just trying to tell vitamincee that she should not hand out admin privileges unless she is 100 percent certain of the user she entrusts with these privileges (one bad egg can make you sick). I do think the way to go rather than give people full admin rights its via role editors which is what i use in all my projects, this way you control with fine detail what a user is allowed to do.

    @mcpeanut

    @vitamincee You should always be very very cautious who you make a site admin, this role should not be given out lightly to users you “think” you can trust, you should look at a few role editor plugins which will allow you to create new roles and edit every part of the privileges that role is granted.

    The part which made me think it was a bug was when I opened the test user’s message from viewing their profile, it brought me to my own profile, but displayed the user’s messages.

    Hmm i too noticed this recently, i cannot remember when though, i also had the same thing happen when viewing a test users profile and clicking a message and thought it was strange.

    I will have to investigate it further and try to see if it is still happening and let you guys know.

    I also agree that being able to disable admins the right to view these messages would be great too.

    .” I seriously doubt any ethical admin would be reading other users PM’s without just cause or if they were served a court subpoena to access the PM’s.

    Ethical or not you will always get people that abuse privileges given to them and keep it quiet, this is human nature, we don’t all think the same and what is Ethical to one person is not Ethical to another.

    Maybe there should be better ways to give users moderator capability’s that doesn’t mean giving them full admin rights, at least this way only the actual site admin has access to doing this in-case it is in-fact ever needed for legal reasons etc?

    Hi @aluxi33, this can easily be done via this code

    function my_disable_bp_registration() {
      remove_action( 'bp_init',    'bp_core_wpsignup_redirect' );
      remove_action( 'bp_screens', 'bp_core_screen_signup' );
    }
    add_action( 'bp_loaded', 'my_disable_bp_registration' );

    add_filter( 'bp_get_signup_page', "firmasite_redirect_bp_signup_page");
        function firmasite_redirect_bp_signup_page($page ){
            return bp_get_root_domain() . '/wp-signup.php';
        }

    What you will need to do is first create a bp-custom.php file (make sure you add the opening and closing tags at the top and bottom ) and put it in your plugins folder, then paste the code between the php opening and closing tags and save.

    This should disable buddypress registration and let you use wordpress registration as default, hope this helps.

    I was looking at this website some time ago and agree about some of the features that are listed on the website and a few of them would be “Handy” to have in buddypress, but i also believe most of the features listed can be added onto buddypress via plugins or by other means, i agree that the privacy between users and choosing if you would like to block other users etc from any contact whatsoever with you would be neat (users being able to block certain activity’s from showing in their stream altogether would be great too).

    As for the media support…well, what can i say, after trying numerous solutions to get everything working right for what my site needs to do (paid and free), i have come to the conclusion that this area of buddypress is one of its biggest downfalls, you basically have limited choices from a media standpoint, meaning you can either choose from forks of outdated plugins for free that do let you have a few basic media options or you can go for plugins like rtmedia which to be honest is a really heavy plugin but works great at a performance cost! or you could opt for other paid media solutions which i have done and still found problems with etc, there is one promising plugin by buddydev which is mediapress that is still in beta and in my opinion has to much wrong with it to use in a live website yet even though it is alot less demanding than rtmedias plugin, so it becomes a waiting game or a case of settling for one of the other options.

    @daniel84uk i have had to do this myself on one of my sites for my own personal reasons using this snippet of code i came across.

    function my_disable_bp_registration() {
      remove_action( 'bp_init',    'bp_core_wpsignup_redirect' );
      remove_action( 'bp_screens', 'bp_core_screen_signup' );
    }
    add_action( 'bp_loaded', 'my_disable_bp_registration' );

    add_filter( 'bp_get_signup_page', "firmasite_redirect_bp_signup_page");
        function firmasite_redirect_bp_signup_page($page ){
            return bp_get_root_domain() . '/wp-signup.php';
        }

    Add this to your bp-custom.php

    Oh sorry @chatty24 i re-read your question and realized you was talking about also keeping sitewide activity where as i was asking bphelp about it changing the sitewide activity…my bad!

    But @bphelp same question still applies from me to you that i asked above.

    @mcpeanut

    Participant

    @bphelp does this also stop public groups from displaying in your activity stream if you are not a member too?

    the reason i ask you this bphelp is because remember the old plugin you was working on (i think it was a fork of some code rich fuller posted a few years ago) which was named “activity-privacy-component” ? you left it on github and described it as a jurrasic plugin because of the new plugin “buddypress activity privacy plugin”.

    Well that very same “Jurrasic plugin” still works very well today and is still far far far more superior at keeping your stream private compared to the plugin you said was better.

    The only one thing that the old “activity-privacy-component” plugin doesnt do is keep the public groups you are not a member of from out of your private stream.
