In reply to: Is this a bug with Notifications?
This is not a bump its already at the top, after testing it again and clearing all notifications via using brajeshes plugin ‘clear notifications’ it seems to now be working correctly and deleting the notifications if the messages have not been read first, i’m not sure what was causing it, if it happens again and i can pinpoint what was causing it i will let you know.
It must have been caused by something i have done creating a custom notifications menu. i just didn’t have access to test on another install right now that’s why i wasn’t sure, but for some reason whatever the problem was one click of the clear notifications with the plugin mentioned above seemed to fix it for me :/I can get the total mention count using this function bp_get_total_mention_count_for_user (); but i am after the function that lets me get the count of mentions i haven’t viewed yet.
Example: in the notifications bubble in the wordpress/buddypress bar if you get mentioned 3 times it will say you have 3 new mentions when you click it and read the mentions it will clear, This is the function i need to find the name of now.
@henrywright Yes that’s exactly it! That’s why i posted here asking i was scratching my head trying to find this function lol, basically what i am trying to do is split “everything” out from the Notification bubble not just friends requests etc because im disabling the buddypresss/wordpress bar completely from users.
so far ive managed to create a menu system that has ‘pending friend requests, group invites, unread messages, total of friends, group total, and all notifications, i have yet to do the @mentions for when you receive a new @mention, do you by offchance know the function for this?
hey @henrywright good to hear from you again its been a while bud, thx for chiming in on this, ahh cool i referred to them as action and filter hooks based on this post at http://etivite.com/api-hooks/ Miss-understanding.
In short yes i am, I have found this function bp_activity_get_comment_count() but it seems to bring the total count a user has made, where as im looking for a function that shows a count if someone replies to an activity update you posted then once you have viewed the update it would reset.
In reply to: Adding favourite posts as a tab in buddypressHey dan i tried this code and the button doesnt seem to show up in my cpt’s
In reply to: Help for BuddyPress Site to Change the World@bphelp i think @rosyteddy has missjudged the userbase in general as to how many active users there are at any one time compared to how many people are registered, I also agree fb has by no means the monopoly on anything, look at youtube as an example, i mean you have to class youtube (google) as a sort of social network in a way or not? I mean it has a crazy amount of users that all interact with each other and can post to each other and it all interlinks together with google plus accounts, then there are sites like linkedin which boasts over 300+ million active users and pinterest etc etc, what these sites have essentially done is tapped themselves into that certain ‘NICHE’ we was talking about earlier in the thread.
In reply to: Help for BuddyPress Site to Change the World@planetearthlings that’s a better explanation than you originally posted π
I really do wish you well with the project, in regards to you asking for ideas about the design etc maybe you could design the site as if it was in space with various portals to different places (meaning pages) where as each portal (page) would represent a different landing site full of different things to do with tasks and challenges?
Maybe even with some kind of animation when a link is clicked transporting you through each portal. In reply to: Help for BuddyPress Site to Change the WorldLOL yes i meant xeon’s haha, that’s me all over spelling something as it sounds π
Yes its expensive but its not intended for buddypress alone although i will test it out with it, its more of a venture into providing affordable hosting to clients etc. I can only afford to pay for it out of my other business revenue.
I just figured seeing as im interested in buddypress and use wordpress i would configure the servers like this seeing as i was purchasing them anyhows.
Too much to go into really as to why i purchased them, there would be no point me making the investment for a buddypress powered site on their own, when i have not yet built a buddypress site i have got traffic for.
In reply to: Help for BuddyPress Site to Change the WorldYes i agree, we are the small-time people in all this when it comes to funds, Well as a start i can keep you updated on my progress and research into this, i have just ordered five zeon powered dedicated servers which totals 5 quad core zeons at 3.4ghz each server has 32gb ddr3 ram and solid state drives appart from 2, I plan setting them up as a cluster for expansion and scalability. the initial config i aim to achieve is using one as a load balancer, one as a database server, one as a dedicated firewall, and the other 2 as dedicated file servers which consist of 10tb in hardrive space in raid. wish me luck π
In reply to: Help for BuddyPress Site to Change the World@bphelp no worries mate, and i don’t think its to much off topic as this would need to be brought into consideration eventually if the reality of his website came true.
In your scenario that would be awesome if that was the case but I am not sure BP or WP could scale to the point that if βeveryoneβ was on the site at one time like the BIG social networks it would handle that kind of traffic without major issues
Thats the beauty of the question π , I really dont think anyone has pushed buddypress coupled with wordpress to its limits as no-one has created that perfect niche yet that makes people want to use it by the masses, This no doubt has yet to be seen, tbh it is very complex to create a truly scalable environment for any platform and no matter if it was your own propriety customized solution or whether it be from using wordpress this is an issue anyone who built an highly successful site would face, i dont think its a question of ‘if’ someone will i think its more a question of ‘when’ π
In reply to: Help for BuddyPress Site to Change the WorldSorry @bphelp please dont take my questioning of your response negatively im genuinely interested in your opinion.
The reason i asked you the question above is because i think most people who have an idea for something they think is groundbreaking generally don’t do enough thinking about how they will implement that idea correctly if it did become successful, example: someone wants to create a social network with a good idea behind it, doesn’t have the funds or know how to have the propriety software you mentioned developed that other social networks have, then they do some research and stumble upon buddypress and think hey i can use it to build my amazing idea from, they then build their idea and think yippee its built im ready to unveil it to the world, and they get some hosting and put it live, it gets busy infact really busy then it grounds to a halt and fails.
Why did this happen? The thought process behind how things will need scaling and handling of growth wasn’t in place.
What if that person had done enough research about scaling and server configurations and are prepared to throw many much needed resources into the equation as and when needed?
The reason i ask you this is because i have now spent nearly 12 months researching about server administration/configurations regarding growth in a wordpress environment so i am curious on other takes on this.
In reply to: Help for BuddyPress Site to Change the World@bphelp i agree with you on alot of things you just said, i also have a different view on a few things.
when it comes to software you need to have something proprietary like the BIG social networks
Ok we all know that buddypress is not designed to beat sites like fb etc, but it is by no means an unusable platform to build upon and expand into a large social network if done the right way.
Alot of this will ultimately depend on resources we can throw into a buddypress powered site if it began to grow at a rapid rate, it is quite possible one day someone will tap into a niche market using buddypress that goes viral amongst this niche, making the website very successful. I am going to ask you this, what would happen in this scenario, say if someone here did build a site that went viral through no fault of their own as everyone just flocked to use the site that was powered by buddypress, are you saying you would have to give up and close it because buddypress and wordpress wouldn’t cope?In reply to: Help for BuddyPress Site to Change the WorldHey @planetearthlings sorry i didn’t reply earlier, even though i have a design background and do a lot of customizing via css and css3 i just wouldn’t have time to commit to helping on another project as i am so busy with other projects right now, i think the reason you aren’t getting any responses is because you have to understand that most people active here are already committed to there own ideas and projects, the only thing id suggest is trying to start some kind of community project that a group of individuals can all chip in and help with.
To do this though you would have to lay down the full expectations of the project and goals, id assume the people involved helping would only do it if it was a none profit project that does not benefit any one single individual or entity, because that’s basically like asking for people to all chip into a business idea/venture and let others build it for you so you gain profit from all their work/time dedicated and help they gave you.
You need to explain with greater detail, when the website is finished and launched will their be fees involved for usage and if so will anyone profit from it?
If it infact being built as a totally free to use website and not designed for you to ultimately make a profit how will the website sustain itself with servers costs, server administration, admin and moderation of the website itself, and growth?
In reply to: Scheduled Postshi again @buddypresslost i remember seeing a plugin that states it can do this or something similar on codecanyon a while back so ive gone and checked back there for you, im not 100 percent sure if it can do what your after but its only 14 dollars to buy this is the link.
http://codecanyon.net/item/buddypress-auto-posting/3635608
Like i said im unsure and i havent read to much into it, maybe you could message the plugin author and ask him if it could be customized for your needs?
Hmm then again after reading more im not sure if its also only backend, maybee you could ask for integration though for what you need, might be worth a try i dunno?
Do you think the forked version on github isnt safe to use?
Ok im not bumping this thread on purpose, I am what you would call an idiot! lol
I got so caught up in everything else i’ve been doing and forgot id already asked this over a year ago, hence me stating it was a long time back since i remember trying to do this, you can delete this thread if i need to carry it on i will post in the original thread i had responses in.Sorry guys to much work and lack of sleep can make you forget things like this when you are trying to do a million things at once π
if i use this code to filter out groups then they do infact remove from the ‘ALL MEMBERS TAB, in sitewide activity.
<?php if ( bp_has_activities( bp_ajax_querystring( 'activity' ).'&object=profile, status, blogs' ) ) : ?>but the problem is they are also removed from the ‘MY GROUPS TAB’, which is where i still want them visible
In reply to: new plugin: BuddyPress Simple EventsI feel you on the frustrations sometimes with lack of functionality you visualize your site to have and cant find any plugin to achieve it (paid or unpaid), i agree that buddypress is lacking a good events plugin. i am sure that the version shane has just released will be improved upon over time.
If he manages to integrate the functionality we mentioned i would gladly buy the plugin.
In reply to: new plugin: BuddyPress Simple EventsI meant shane lol, thier names both have bp in them and i was just reading a post that danbp was a part of lol, lack of sleep mate can do strange things to the human brain hahahaha
In reply to: new plugin: BuddyPress Simple Events@shanebp, n1 for this plugin bud i will check it out later, referring back to what rosyteddy was saying above, an option for attendees and maybe a way to search through the list of attendees would be an important feature.
However, without the β Attending β Yes, no, maybeβ event plugin has no meaning in the current and present day internet β please implement it
@rosyteddy, do you not think this statement is a little harsh on dan? It sounds sort of like a demand haha, ok dan didnt integrate everything into it straight away but i bet he will work more on the plugin after we ask him nicely what we would like to see integrated into the plugin followed by our suggestions.
In reply to: Migrate PHP-Fusion to WP/BP/bbPhave you tried using this plugin? https://wordpress.org/plugins/cms2cms-php-fusion-to-wp-migration/
Im a big fan of buddydevs work and think he has some really good plugins, and i have no doubt that mediapress will be an amazing plugin once out of beta stages, there are a good few issues that still need addressing and i just hope brajesh doesn’t get sidetracked because he has so many plugins to try and keep on top of that he often does, I think once he fixes the lightbox issues ive already pointed out to him then it will be useable, it is alot lighter than rtmedias plugin thats for sure!
videopress looks interesting ive seen it before but havent tried it yet, and im not sure about the one on codecanyon at all.
@buddypresslost hmm, id always rather have my own dedicated ip address, so whats your verdict so far after using the cloud for a day? do you think it will be the correct route for yourself?
I think im definitely sticking to the route i mentioned tbh, i would love for you to keep me updated on your progress with your venture to see if it works out good for you using a media rich site in the cloud, have you already got a strong user base for your site or is it a new venture?
Maybe in a few months time of us both running these very different setups we could compare the pros and cons, When i have finally got this all setup and working as i intend i might even post an how to for reference, showing what steps i took to configure it all, I have done weeks worth of reading and watched hours upon hours of videos now about how to set wordpress up to be scalable via the combining of servers route, that and my knowledge about server administration in general should help me achieve this kind of setup, I feel i have got my head around most of the steps needed to achieve this kind of setup now, No doubt i will run into a few hiccups and problems at first but i’m willing to put the time into it.
This is why i believe although the cloud is great, it just cannot compete with you having properly configured hardware for your needs in the terms of space needed, although it can give you as much storage space/cpu/ram as you need on the fly, how much is someone willing to pay?
The cloud is perfect for websites that delete media when not needed etc or for websites that concentrate on traffic alone without serving any kind of files etc. What would happen if you had a website that suddenly went crazy and you got 50x more traffic than any month previous and they all joined and uploaded media and you get landed with a bill you cannot afford?
2k per month for the server disk space i already have? See that’s what i was getting at about truly sustainable expansion environment in the cloud will cost an immense amount of money if your website went viral. i do realize if it did go viral you would someway or other have to be bringing in the income to cover costs from it too, but why pay 5x 10x 20x more for storage in the cloud for a media rich website.
Damn for 2k a month i can easy double the specs i gave you above!
