You don’t have to crop the avatar. Extend the side and/or corner of the cropping tool to full width and height and you’re good to go.

Since you cannot access wp-admin, deactivate all plugins by renaming the plugins folder manually via FTP/cpanel to e.g. wp-content/plugins-xxx

You need to activate BuddyPress first. Second, select Twenty Eleven theme. Third, install BP Template Pack and go through the BP Compatibility process.
