– BP default theme
– updated from 1.6.4 to 1.7 and had this problem before, I thought it would be solved
– all plugins were deactivated except BP
– the only challenge is users can’t see users’ topics

detailed description:
admins can make topic and post in group forums,
other roles can make topic and post in group forums,
admins can see every topics and posts of group forums,
other roles face a blank page when they open a topic of group forum.

I am not certain but it sounds like a php 5.4+ error.
Try adding this code to your themes functions.php between the opening and closing php tags:error_reporting(E_ERROR | E_PARSE);

I give you my opinion and tried to explain you how this is working. Maybe i’m wrong, maybe not. And my english is not the best  for explaining such subtilities.

Perhaps others like @hnla or @mercime will give you better advice.

Please contact your web host for support, and ask them to look in the PHP error log for any error messages — then tell us, and we can try to help.

@mercime – 500s are server-side errors (a WSOD) so finding out what the actual error is the best first step 🙂

1.7 is compatible with themes that follow the correct WP conventions if it doesn’t work then it’s the themes fault essentially, and this we have been remarking on and off for a while, this has been the aim of 1.7 all along the betas and RC releases haven’t changed that as such.

Hi @mercime, sorry I should have marked this post resolved. When I was checking the script for more faults, I noticed that I could not upload photos. To resolve this I changed the default settings in media from
/home/www/mysite.com/wp-content/uploads.
to
wp-content/uploads

Then all the avatars appeared and I could also upload.

I was using city name, and changed it to UTC-5, nothing happens

Hi @mercime, Yes that is the plugin I’m using but I’m not sure about the problem would be because of it. I deactivate it and the problem remains.
