You can get the password out of the db but it’s not safe.
why the need, users rarely change a password?

it’s a security check but if you must
echo password into field and make field hidden.

Double check. This only happens if a BuddyPress component is added. A theme can add components.

It’s most likely the same code in both versions. If it’s true it’s a bug but you could always create your own widgets.

create a file in your theme with this directory structure.
yourtheme/buddypress/members/register.php
you can copy this file over from the buddypress plugin folder under bp-templates/bp-legacy/buddypress/members/register.php
Edit the file to your liking.

member search uses profile fields.

There is no wizard in BuddyPress 1.7
Go to Settings > General and check anyone can register

You can probably use the Achievements plugin for this. Create three Achievements one for each type and then set them to award after X amount of activity.

The url is based on the users login and if you change it then links on the site to a user profile will break. That said, you can allow usernames to be changed. http://buddydev.com/plugins/bp-username-changer/
