Disable the custom header functionality on the default BuddyPress theme:
define( ‘BP_DTHEME_DISABLE_CUSTOM_HEADER’, true );The good thing using BuddyPress is you OWN the site data and members and can do whatever you want. The bad thing is copying Facebook will most likely fail. Users do not need another Facebook.
In reply to: How to add an item menu to member menuLook through the skeleton component plugin. There is a bit of code that’s something like: create_new_subnav( array(……
You need to have an activate page as well as register. You do not have to place those pages in the menu they just need to be there.
In reply to: Buddypress is not SEO friendlyYou actually do not want your member pages and their status updates to be cached by google because of privacy. There is no privacy settings in BuddyPress and the last thing your users want is a site owner forcing their updates to search bots.
In reply to: Status MessageTry my BuddyPress verified plugin. You can change the text or edit plugin
In reply to: idea to improve theme integration processI had another idea using get_template_part for the meat and just have files with the structure markup. This would, on the n00b eye, look easier to fix.
get_header
content
padder
get_template_part
padder
contentget_footer
You need to change every file that is listed on the step 3 page.
The Header and footer and sidebar and content area are usually in every WordPress template. You need to edit the BuddyPress files added to your theme to match the structure of your theme.
Sometimes the content area is called container or wrapper or something else. You need to match the containing div around the content to the BP files.
In step 3 it shows you a diagram of div markup. If you have never edited code you may need to hire someone to do this. On complex themes it can be a challenge.

In reply to: Component vs. Plugincc @boonebgorges what’s the timeline for compatibility with current BP?
In reply to: Component vs. PluginIn reply to: Getting HackedIf you are on BP 1.5 go to the page admin and change the URL for register to anything but register or signup. Example: get-your-account
Use a captcha plugin that requires you to answere a question correctly. The number letter ones can be hacked
Make sure the words WordPress or BuddyPress is not shown in the footer or header. View source of page and then find and eliminate those words. Bots search these and then find them. You may also want to change the default text in sidebar.php about creating an account.

In reply to: AJAX not working in BP1.5 default child themeOr is should say bp_dtheme_ajax function is getting called twice
In reply to: AJAX not working in BP1.5 default child themeSomething is calling the Ajax.php file 2x. Only way to fix is to find where it’s being used and kill it
In reply to: Component vs. PluginThey both should be created with plugins. A BuddyPress component is a sitewide content type that would have a directory structure, like members or groups.
The skeleton plugin is being updated, current version on github.

In reply to: AJAX not working in BP1.5 default child themeDelete _inc folder from child theme and make sure BuddyPress template pack plugin is not installed
In reply to: buddypress mobile, like grindr?Safari browser can use the gps API on an iPhone, I’m not sure about Android. You could create code that attaches user meta to a logged in user and save the gps coordinates then filter members list by distance.
There are a couple location plugins but those are address based in which you enter address into profile fields. They do not update your current info.
So yes it’s doable but no plugin currently exists.
In reply to: How Do I Show Only Status Updates? You filter the loop just like WordPress.
