    Twitter is confusing. Why emulate it?

    Could they… as an interim measure (not sure what the issue is)… simply switch to HTML view in TinyMCE and paste the YouTube embed code?

    The new 1.2 theme does this too.

    New domains always have to spend at least a year in the Google “sandbox”. This is a period of time during which Google doesn’t really trust you because you’re new. As a result, moving a site from a long established domain to a new one can have a devastating impact on your Google rank. This is something that could take years to recover from. In this case, you’re much better off using a 301 redirect. Using a 301 will have ZERO negative impact on your Google rankings.

    It was broken actually. There are hard-coded links in the script that reference the plugin folder as “bn-auto-join-group” but in the latest version the plugin folder name is actually “auto-join-groups”. Simply renaming the plugin folder to “bn-auto-join-group” fixes all the broken links and form submissions.

    Hmm. The Roadmap has changed quite a bit since i last saw it. Anyway. I’m sure we’ll get a decent album component at some point.

    Anyone is free to built this feature and charge for it or not. That’s why it called open source :) It is on the BuddyPress Roadmap but not until quite a ways out. In the meantime, I’m sure we’ll see other free and perhaps even paid solutions by others. If any of those are half good… perhaps they will end up being the solution that BuddyPress officially adopts and rolls into the core. Who knows.

    There is a WPMU plugin that does auto activation. Don’t recall the name but I’ve used it and it works.

    @21cdb Wow. Good catch! Why did I not know about this plugin?! Maybe I looked at it months ago and discounted it because of the fee and the fact that bp-events was looking good at the time. I’d be more than happy to pay if it’s a decent plugin. I wish they had demo pages of their plugins so you could try before you buy. But it looks good based on the description. Directory listings. Groups and Profile integration. Calendar views. And even Google Maps integration (probably a simple feature to add… but still cool).

    The only thing is… I would not mind paying. $79 is a small price to pay. But I’d hate to join just for that one plugin and then drop my membership and miss out on any and all future updates. Hmm. And there’s no way I can afford $79/mo. on an ongoing basis.

    I also just posted asking if it will work with 1.2.

    I guess that’s a pretty good answer joseph! Two other possibilities already. One paid and one perhaps just starting out… but nevertheless. I’m sure there will be options. Too bad about the slow progress of bp-events. Maybe Erwin is just taking a well deserved break.

    As a side note… I find it humorous and ironic that in a thread that started with “this thing is taking forever” there’s a response above written just three short months ago saying “once 1.1 drops (looking forward to tomorrow, Andy!)”.

    @takeo

    Hard to say Joseph. But it’s safe to say that events is a component that a lot of people will want. So I can’t imagine a future where there wouldn’t be some kind of solution. The demand is there. How patient we mere mortals (non-programmers) have to be is another story.

    @Xevo. That’s a personal choice of course. My view is that it’s just a button. It would be nice to have it look just as pretty in IE6/7. But it still works. You’re not breaking anything. I actually still support IE6+ in all my work. That’s more than a lot web developers these days (lots of people are dropping IE6). But when it comes to minor aesthetic issues that don’t affection functionality… I don’t fret too much. That’s the price you pay for using an inferior browser. Frankly. And again… it’s a small price. The only thing I don’t fret about are minor things like rounded corners, pretty buttons, etc.

    @Mike. Good to know. I’ll try disabling all my plugins.

    The only browser that you usually need to target for adjustments is Explorer. And Explorer versions can easily be targeted by using conditional tags in the head of your html.

    I think the less HTML in the core, the better. You can already select submit buttons using CSS. Like this:

    input[type="submit"] { blah blah blah }

    Probably doesn’t work in any version of Explorer. LOL. But who cares. Let the IE people see an ugly (but still functional) button.

    @takeo

    Participant

    Well… the new default theme for 1.2 works in 1.2 :-) I’ve been working on a child theme based off that for a couple of weeks now. It works great! Altho’ bp-events doesn’t work well with the new theme since bp-events uses the previous 1.1 template structure.

    @Bowe. I still want them to have a choice. But for the global group (like your help group)… everyone should be a member so that when I post information everyone will see it. I’m betting that about 90% of my users will require prompting via email notices in order to visit the site. Lots of older hunters and military and outdoorsy types who are not very web savvy. This are people who, for the most part, make fun of things like Facebook and Twitter. They do everything by email. I’m trying to nudge them into the 21st century.

    @Mike. In BP1.2-rare and WPMU2.8.6… when I click an edit link in “Site Admin > Profile > Groups Link” it just reloads the wp-admin dashboard.

    @takeo

    Well… the new default theme is pretty different from the old default theme. The templates are structured in a completely new (and better) way. I had built a child theme off the old default… and it took a fair bit of work to get the same child theme working with the new default. I imagine that any plugin which relied on you adding a folder full of template to your theme (like bp-events for instance) will have some issues with BP1.2 and the default theme. Unless the compatibility thing Andy is talking about will address that too.

    @Bowe: I am aware of the user moderation plugin… but I did not know about it’s “join groups upon registration” feature. That’s pretty cool! I’d still be relying on people to actually click those checkboxes though. But that would significantly reduce the ‘friction’ involved in getting people into the right groups. Thanks!

    Like you… I’d still like to have a way to have a group that everyone belongs to automatically… without any choice in the matter. Auto Join will hopefully do that for me, but……..

    @Mike: I’m running BP1.2-rare on my development box and the plugin doesn’t seem to work. Andy says there will be a compatibility layer or plugin when 1.2 goes public. So maybe it will work then.

    In reply to: Joinless groups?

    @takeo

    Exactly. We’re a Ground Search & Rescue Group. So in our case… we need to facilitate communication with the entire membership for things like announcements, general SAR-related news and alarm calls. But we also have a lot of committees (training, management, IT, etc.) which will only interest the members of those committees. If I have to rely on every member actually joining the “General Membership” group… it’ll never happen! I’m running a pre-launch test drive site now with just 20 people and it’s hard enough just getting them to join a group! LOL. So I need a way to “force” everyone (or groups of people) into certain groups. For instance, I could create a custom profile field asking what committees they serve on and map those to their respective groups with the auto-join plugin. And to force all members into a general group… maybe I could use some kind of wildcard. Maybe it will work with 1.2 once 1.2 goes final and includes it’s backwards-compatibility layer.

    @takeo

    Ah right. I recall you mentioning something about that before. That’s very cool Andy! Good to know.

    @takeo

    Yup. I’m finding lots of plugins don’t work in 1.2. Lots of changes in both the core and the theme.

    I also need “joinless groups” for my community of 175 people. This plugin appears not to work in BP1.2 WPMU2.8.6 currently. When I click the edit link in “Site Admin > Profile > Groups Link” it just reloads the dashboard.
