    So you’re considering forking BuddyPress?

    Is this happening when you attempt to activate it… or afterwards?

    Just FYI… this plugin (the latest trunk anyway) is not quite in a finished state. It’s got a few rough edges.

    I looked into Elgg for a few weeks a while ago. My conclusion? Well… you know what they say… if you don’t have anything good to say… don’t say anything at all. But I guess that’s saying something :) LOL.

    As others have said… just turn off blogging and hide the “Blogs” menu item. Simple.

    p.s. As for the “trying to do it all” idea and the 5 year time frame… think about Twitter. It’s an incredibly simple application. Breathtakingly simple. It does one teeny tiny little thing. It has maybe 2% of the functionality that Facebook has. But look at how it’s taken off!

    A few quick thoughts and comments…

    1. People use Facebook, YouTube etc. for one reason… volume… millions of “eyeballs” and astronomical amounts of content. It helps that they are a joy to use. Usability is paramount for user adoption.

    2. Don’t lock yourself in a closet for 5 years trying to build the perfect solution and unleash it all at once. Who knows where the web will be in 5 years. That’s a lifetime in “web years”. Start small and constantly tweak and evolve.

    3. You COULD use WordPress, BuddyPress… but at a certain point I would think you’d get into a square peg / round hole scenario. If you’re really trying to do something new and cool, and you have the funding, build it from the ground up… probably in either PHP of Ruby.

    p.s. re: my custom template tag above to show the start dates in the directory view… I just clued in and realized that I should be doing this in the functions.php file rather than hacking Erwin’s plugin. So here’s the function to add to the functions.php file of your theme.

    function bp_the_site_event_date_start() {
    echo bp_get_the_site_event_date_start();
    }
    function bp_get_the_site_event_date_start() {
    global $site_events_template;

    return apply_filters( 'bp_get_the_site_event_date_start', date( ('l M j - Y'), $site_events_template->event->date_start ) );
    }
    add_action( 'plugins_loaded', 'bp_the_site_event_date_start');

    Then in the event directory loop template in your theme, just call it like this

    <?php p_get_the_site_event_date_start() ?>

    Thanks John. Yes. It would be a rare case probably. I simply had it that way because my DNS and Virtual Host had not been configured yet. But I think perhaps I did find a bug maybe? Should I submit this to Trac? Low priority fix I’m sure.

    Okay. I have the site setup with a real domain now. Add Friends works. Definitely broken when installed in a sub-directory however.

    Have others had issues with installing WPMU/BP in a directory? Wondering if this is a bug.

    Interesting. When I change the htaccess file to include this line:

    # stop looping code
    RewriteCond %{ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS} 200
    RewriteRule .* - [L]

    The error message that gets logged when I try to add a friend changes to this:

    File does not exist: /home/www/cl-t038-352cl.privatedns.com/public_html/satsangha.org/satsangha.org, referer: http://cl-t038-352cl.privatedns.com/public_html/satsangha.org/members/mandee/

    But of course… changing the rewrite base to the below breaks pretty much the entire site:

    RewriteBase /public_html/

    Something tells me this won’t be a problem once the domain name is working and the Rewrite Base is just set to the root (forward slash).

    Thanks John.

    The site is living at http://cl-t038-352cl.privatedns.com/public_html/satsangha.org/ (working now on getting the DNS settings added so my virtual host will work) and the second line of my .htaccess file is RewriteBase /public_html/satsangha.org/

    I’m guessing it’s a problem with my rewrite rules? But I haven’t modified them either by hand or by changing the permalink structure.

    Okay. I just started fresh. I completely deleted the entire website. All the files. I also completely deleted the database. I made a fresh database. I uploaded WPMU. Installed it. Then uploaded BuddyPress and activated it. And I followed the installation instructions to a “T”. So a complete virgin fresh install of WPMU 2.8.6 and BP 1.1.2. I made two users. And still… I cannot add friends. The busy icon on the button just spins forever and nothing happens. Completely at a loss here. Any ideas?!

    Looks okay. All I’d say (as far as things that really stick out at first glance)… is that the logo is kind of a disaster. It’s kind of ugly and about 200% bigger than it needs to be. I think you could clean things up a lot simply by setting it on white and making it smaller.

    Also… you probably have this on your radar anyway… but the banner ads are sticking out to the right. You probably want those contained within your header area.

    I dreamed of a circle. I dreamed of a circle round. And in that circle was a maze. A terrible spiral to be lost in.

    Ooh. BP 1.2 would be a nice Christmas present :)

    I learned when trying to override the BuddyPress widget registrations that your theme will use BOTH function.php files… the parent and child. So you may need to unregister the original function and/or use a new function name… etc.

    Does the Kubrick / K2 theme allow users to add a logo to it’s big blue header?

    Also, how does letting an admin upload a logo (as a custom config option) mean more coding? The idea is that it would mean zero coding. You would go into the theme settings, click a button, upload a graphic, done.

    And trust me… CSS is easy for me and you… but as a developer… I’m happy when a client can just figure out how to log in and write a post! Most people can’t handle anything more complicated than email and facebook.

    The question is how to do it now. That’s what we’re discussing. I can’t imagine that anyone would think it’s a bad idea to have a logo as a config option. Sounds logical to me. You should open a ticket for this enhancement suggestion in Trac
