This issue has also been on my site for four years.
Only affects Android devices, not iPhone or pc/laptop.
When the buddypress drop-down items in the admin bar are clicked (top-right on screen) , for example Activity, Profile, Notifications, Messages, then the first sub-menu item is automatically selected and clicked without any user action. The user is unable to select the second or third sub-menu item.
I use BP 10.6.1 and the plugin linked below works fine on my site.
But it is now 8 years old, and is likely incompatible with newer versions of BP.
You should text it thoroughly before trying it on your live site.
Alternatively, you might consider using a “whitelist” only plugin, in my experience very effective in keeping out most bots plus temporary email addresses.
– I still use Buddypress 10.6.1 and can confirm the issue you describe “When they click to page two, the sorting resets to “Last Active,” is indeed present.
– also the issue with the Repair Tools (Repair member “last activity” data) has also been present for a while. Last year I used it, it unexpectedly reset all my users’ last active time to 9 months earlier (all of them). I had to restore my site from backup.

The Friends label does not change, neither in the Friends component nor in the Buddypress user account menu (top right on screen)

Sorry I have no idea about a technical/code fix for this.
We lost about 12 hours of activity etc. by restoring backup, we decided this was better than waiting for days/weeks for a fix and possibly never getting one.
Same thing happened to me a while ago, all users had 9 months added. This seemed to be related to when I had changed hosting providers 9 months earlier. But not clear, and no solution available.
I had to restore the site from a recent server backup. It solved the issue.
We use the Better Messages plugin from WordPlus, many different options included. I’m afraid I am no longer familiar with the underlying default BP functionality.
Btw, the Better Messages plugin is excellent. Definitely recommended.
