@henrywright Works! Now that is elegant!
In reply to: Hook for when a user first logs inApology!
first suggestion should have read:
function vub_login_redirect($redirect_to, $set_for, $user){ global $current_user, $wpdb; $val = 'no'; $var = xprofile_get_field_data (virgin, $user -> ID); if ($var != "") { $redirect_to = bp_core_get_user_domain($user->ID) .'/groups/'; }else{ xprofile_set_field_data( 'virgin', $user -> ID, $val); $redirect_to = bp_core_get_user_domain($user->ID) .'/profile/change-avatar/'; } wp_redirect( $redirect_to ); exit(); } add_action('login_redirect', 'vub_login_redirect', 20, 3);In reply to: Hook for when a user first logs inHi @ndh01,
I think you could do this just with buddypress.
(just please backup database before….. etc)
Go to Profile Fields—> (Click) Add New Field Group
Add New Field (text) say Field Name virgin
Then add the following to your functions.php
function vub_login_redirect($redirect_to, $set_for, $user){ global $current_user, $bp, $wpdb; $val = 'no'; if (bp_get_profile_field_data (virgin, $user -> ID )!=""){ $redirect_to = bp_core_get_user_domain($user->ID) .'/groups/'; }else{ xprofile_set_field_data( 'virgin', $user -> ID, $val); $redirect_to = bp_core_get_user_domain($user->ID) .'/profile/change-avatar/'; } wp_redirect( $redirect_to ); exit(); } add_action('login_redirect', 'vub_login_redirect', 20, 3);Alternatively you could as you have suggested create a new meta.
A useful plugin for that would be User Meta Manager
Add Custom Meta say a text field Name — firsttimer
then add the following (instead of the above) to your functions.php
function vu_login_redirect($redirect_to, $set_for, $user){ global $current_user, $wpdb; $firsttimer = get_usermeta($user -> ID, 'firsttimer',single); $val = 'no'; if (!empty ($firsttimer)) { $redirect_to = bp_core_get_user_domain($user->ID) .'/groups/'; }else{ update_user_meta( $user -> ID,'firsttimer',$val); $redirect_to = bp_core_get_user_domain($user->ID) .'/profile/change-avatar/'; } wp_redirect( $redirect_to ); exit(); } add_action('login_redirect', 'vu_login_redirect', 20, 3);Obviously change the redirects to wherever you want the user to go.
In reply to: multi communities in one websiteThe page at https://wordpress.org/plugins/bp-multi-network/ states
Multiple WP networks can be created with either:
▪ WP Multi Network
▪ Networks+I use Networks +.
There may also be other combinations of plugins that may work.
Googling “wordpress”, “buddypress” “multi-network” or “multinetwork” should be sufficient to come across the few others that may fall into these categories – such as Networks for WordPress at https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/networks-for-wordpress and BuddyPress Multi Network at http://buddydev.com/plugins/buddypress-multi-network/ .
Examining all of the them as well as studying their support forums would be useful in making a decision on which combination to use for your particular requirements.
Given that a multi-network plugin will essentially hold the entire show together I would venture that it is well worth the research you are now undertaking.
Just to be perfectly clear, I am an open source enthusiast but I am not an open-source absolutist though some are and are perfectly entitled to be.
If something works, saves hours of time when compared with other items, is supported and is reasonably priced I will use it (when my budget allows) and will say so.
But, I can only vouch for what I know works.
I can only vouch for, in this case the plugin I cited above, and the continuous free support over a number of years, which comes from recognised top class developers.
This support alone should ordinarily have cost many $X,00s, bringing the price of said plugin deep into negative figures – i.e considerably less than free.
In reply to: multi communities in one websiteTry bp multi network https://wordpress.org/plugins/bp-multi-network/ AND Networks + from http://wpebooks.com/networks/
Networks+ is a “premium” (small) plugin written by one of the authors of bp-multi-network and numerous (about 30) other plugins in the WordPress repository and it is fully supported.
Using buddypress and bbpress together with those two plugins you will be able to have separate communities with separate activity streams, forums, groups and blogs all in one wordpress installation and in one database. Membership is shared.
There may be other combinations of plugins that may work. The combination above does work.
@shanebp – fix is perfect – many thanks!
Next task: find out why 2014 is trying to call it from that location.
‘Fraid I’m lost here – other than to observe the differences with other servers/hosts as this appears only (afaik) on wpengine with some themes including twentyfourteen.
wpengine have some mu-plugins on the install not all of which appear in the dashboard.
There are lots of js files in them ?????There is also a plugin (hyperdb) that i can see in ftp but that does NOT show up in the dashboard (no js files here)
These are the standout differences and obviously server software on wpengine may be different to that on other hosts.
First file absent though there is no buddypress folder in twentyfourteen (i think????)
second file present
it begins /*! buddypress – v2.1.0 – 2014-10-06 9:39:07 PM UTC – https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress/ */
also at http://pastebin.com/D7BYBp4m
In reply to: Buddypress Error / Problem on one server/host only.Update.
Yesterday there was a general notification from wpengine about a wordpress bug notified on https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/29557 that effected some installations on some of the wpengine servers.
I had hoped that maybe this would explain the anomaly outlined above.
So i put the theme on an installation on wp-engine with wp v.3.9.2
No change i’m afraid .
but
i’m not finding the above error in the error logs of this installationFrustrating!
In reply to: Buddypress Error / Problem on one server/host only.just am really grateful for any any leads whatsoever.
I just followed @nexus observations up and the slight anomaly he alluded to re multisite on that installation was due to particular sites using an out of date theme.
That has now been remedied.
So my original problem outlined in the first post of this thread still stands 100% (unfortunately)
In reply to: Buddypress Error / Problem on one server/host only.@nexus66 commented:
Multisite feature not working,is it the integration issue??
Can see where you’re coming from !
helens blog etc —
but
i reactivatived that test installation (after 2 half years) just to see if i could replicate the Kleo activity problem. Now that storeruby installation has been untouched so… there will be other features not working…
ok to the problem/idea/solution at hand – check if multisite is functioning properly
go back to http://ashford.isourplace.ie/activity/ (again multi-site-multi-network on inexpensive shared hosting) username: bingo password: bingo1!
check blogs tab or click on first link in activity stream — that appears ok to me.
and the activity stream appears to be functioning as it should.
so i don’t believe that its a “multisite” problem per se.
In reply to: Buddypress Error / Problem on one server/host only. What is this particular theme doing differently?
The Kleo theme has “cascading” effects. (i don’t know the technical term/description)
If you have the time please visit http://seventhqueen.com/themedemo/ and get onto members or groups pages to see this effect.
In the meantime i provided above a working test version on the HostingIreland server
Now here is the working test version on the relatively inexpensive shared-hosting Hostgator server.
http://healthforum.health.storeruby.com/ username: test password: henrywright
(Both of those installations are multisite/multinetwork – so in theory should be sucking a load memory)
In reply to: Buddypress Error / Problem on one server/host only. Many thanks @hnla ,
changed that as advised to 2000. (purged caches and reset permissions) no change
pushed it to 4000 – no change
Also in htaccess is php_value memory_limit 200M
and now i put in wp-config.php — define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘200M’);
Still no change!
(i am quite puzzled that this only happens with this theme on this server. not with other themes on this server and not at all on other servers)
Could this be related to whatever software this server is running on ?
In reply to: Buddypress Error / Problem on one server/host only. Many thanks, @henrywright, for your response and support.
Your suggestion was what the theme developers also suggested.
As far as I am aware, on wpengine users are unable to access their php.ini. file.
Perhaps i might define the memory in wp-config.php which is accessible ! ??
In the meantime i have replicated/tested a SUCCESSFULL implementation on THREE other servers (bluehost, hostgator & hostingireland).
All are basic bog standard very very cheap shared hosting and carrying a multisite/buddypress installation – and all that that entails. (and one of these is very slow which is understandable)
However the latest response from a very considerably more expensive wpengine is
As for the issue with the memory limit on the server, this is unfortunately a limitation on the server here.
Since our server is configured to stop the sites set up on it from running anything that could impact the performance we wish to give to our customers.
The best option moving forward on our platform is to optimize that function to use less memory.
I would recommend contacting the developer to see if we can get some information from them as to how that can be done.
Please let us know if you have any other questions!
Thank you and have a great day!
Quite!

Might be a LITTLE help in the ongoing battle against spam!

In reply to: BuddyPress theme – Looking for ideasI like the idea of the left-hand side navigation (viewing on desktop). It seems to allow everything else to have more space on the screen. The colour scheme is good too, very easy on the eye.
+1
all pretty stunning so far!
Correction:
Item 3 does NOT persist.
comments from op or anyone else on a blog now come through to activity.
So all issues that I raised have been resolved.
As indicated the problem (on my installation) WAS a plugin.
items 1 and 2 of my observations above have been eliminated by deactivating this plugin
Item 3 still persists (at least on my installation) even with trunk 8229
Aside from this, it’s unfortunately the sort of thing that can only be fixed if it can be reproduced
Yes – i can reproduce this though fully accept that blame probably lies with my customisations either with plugins or functions though these live happily with bp 1.9.2
So i have put this up on an online test site – (slow)
at test site http://ballynagran.isourplace.ie/ – (slow) wp 3.8 bp trunk 8227
login username ben4 password ben4
And i believe i’ve reproduced the errors reported.Very much appreciate any feedback when time permits.
1) see http://ballynagran.isourplace.ie/members/ben4/friends/requests/ where a friendship request from ben8 has been repeated over 50 times
2) the item-meta in activity “active 3 months ago” is not being updated – login as anne anne or nils nils to reproduce
3) a very recent comment in the blog http://bep.ballyngran.isourplace.ie (at http://bep.ballynagran.isourplace.ie/2013/08/29/solid-fuel-heating-resources/) is not replicated in activity of http://ballyngran.isourplace.ie/activity
If bp 2 beta is replaced by 1.9.2 normal service is returned.
bp 1.9.2 can also be seen on a dot com version of this test site on a different server
Have installed a debug plugin – results can be seen on http://isourplace.ie/wp-content/debug.log
On a local install tried deactivating cat / tag plugin — no change.
Another glitch is NOT as described – please disregard -apologies.
it appears to be confined to the update of the item-meta in activity “active 3 months ago” not being updated
plus
Initial observation re post comment and re friendship requests still stand
Another glitch is NOT a glitch – please disregard -apologies.
Initial observation re post comment and re frienship requests still stand
before heading away just a small update
update
the above behaviour appears (at least on my local installation) to be across themes
but once one friendship request is accepted all requests (from that member) dissapearAnother glitch (now at trunk 8207)
Activity
Activity appears to be updated on the Main Sitewide Activity Stream — all ok
but
the link in members (View) to http://onenetwork.dev/activity/p/331/ resolves to http://my-network.dev/membersthe link in a profile say of Ben4 http://onenetwork.dev/members/ben4/activity does not open instead it resolves to http://my-network.dev/members/ben4/
and the item-meta in activity “active 3 months ago” is not being updated (see https://i.imgur.com/lICG7YL.jpg )
Hi,
re
nothing new is appearing on the activity stream when I publish a blog post or comment on the forums etc.
My experience so far.
Setup local install: multisite. WP 3.9 nightly ; BP trunk 8204 minus tests folder; Theme p2 v. 1.5.3 plugins – a lot.New Blog Post, New bbpress topics, Replies to bbpress topics and New groups ARE all turning up in Activity.
but
*** New Blog comment does NOT turn up in Activity.
haven’t properly tested Friendship but can report that so far when a request is sent it turns up properly in “Pending Requests” BUT in the Profile is duplicated sometimes over 100 times!
SEE https://i.imgur.com/lICG7YL.jpg (- some css still to do-)
Now admittedly this could very well be due to one of the plugins but with the same plugins in 3.8 / 1.9.2 set-up this does not happen.
Just a grateful user – no great knowledge. Away till Wed.
