In reply to: New BP Chat plugin for Buddypress
Sorry for the lag time folks – earning an income to pay bills has to take priority over developing code for free
I’ll get back to finishing up the chat plugin as soon as I can.
Meanwhile the BP Twitter plugin is essentially finished. I just need to check a few things before releasing it.
In reply to: New Twitter Plugin for BuddyPressThe BP Twitter is nearly done – just a bit more testing to do. Seems to work fine but there is a timeout condition that I want to catch and display differently. Like when pulling data from Twitter, their site is often too busy to answer in a reasonable timeframe (15 second or less) so I have to trap the timeout and handle it, which the plugins does – but I want to modify the handling before releasing the plugin.
As for BP Chat, it’s progressing quickly. There is a new group chat feature that is basically working now, but it needs more work.
In reply to: New BP Chat plugin for Buddypress@Budhajeewa Supun: It’ll be released as soon as it’s ready, which at this point it is not. We’re working the group chat feature – which is basically working but not done yet.
In reply to: New BP Chat plugin for Buddypress@Gpo1: Chrome? You ought to see it in IE 6 – Yuk. I’ll get around to testing in Chrome. First I am fixing functionality problems. CSS comes after that – for now anyway. Which shouldn’t be much a problem since something like 0.0001 percent of the world uses Chrome at the moment and about 60 percent use IE 6.
In reply to: New BP Chat plugin for Buddypress@Enlightenmental1 – I consider it good alpha code right now. We’ll probably go straight from there to release.
In reply to: New BP Chat plugin for Buddypress@Enlightenmental1 – the beta is up on the test site for open use.
In reply to: New BP Chat plugin for Buddypress@Gpo1: I have no idea what Facebook does – I’m severely allergic to it
But Ok, suggestion noted.
In reply to: New BP Chat plugin for Buddypress@Michael Berra: Localization is possible. Someone will have to create the language files though. The code is written in English at the moment.
@Everyone: Also, I’ve made some upgrades to chat over the past 2 days – it now has an even more streamlined status bar; a new sound feature that plays a brief audio file when someone sends you a new message; and when the chat window is minimized a little popup appears if someone sends you a message. You can also set yourself as visible to everyone or just your friends, or make yourself completely unavailable for chat in general. Chat history now includes date separation plus time stamps.
This first rendition is nearly done. Still on the agenda for this version: Let users delete their chat history, let the site admin trim history for everyone if the need arises.
I looked at adding “person A chatted with person B” to the activity screen but at the moment it doesn’t seem worth the effort, plus some people might not want that showing up. Anybody have an opinion about this sort of feature?
In reply to: New BP Chat plugin for BuddypressThe chat interface has been revamped to better support chat with many different people at the same time.
So far it works in Firefox, IE 7, and Chrome. Not sure about Opera or Safari. IE 6 is in development, although I still say that using IE 6 ought to be illegal….
If you find bugs, or use Opera or Safari and test the chat please report whether there are problems.

We’ll be adding audible alerts when a new chat message arrives and some other cool features soon.
Look in bp-core/bp-core-templatetags.php around line 158.
In reply to: Ninja Buddypress Developer Wanted!Hi Tellman, I can help you. Check your message box here at this site for more info.
In reply to: New BP Chat plugin for BuddypressFYI – The chat plugin should be working Ok now – I think.
Added a new status bar too.
In reply to: New BP Chat plugin for Buddypress@Renzokuomo – I checked it out before, there are some serious problems with that code.
In reply to: New Twitter Plugin for BuddyPress@Gpo1 – It’s there now, and it was not easy!
In reply to: New Twitter Plugin for BuddyPress@Roy McKenzie – I didn’t find it, I wrote it based on some Ajax libraries – which still need some modification. Thus the chat plugin is very much still in development.
@Gpo1 – Those 2 features are data intensive because of the way Twitter’s API works. I’m thinking of how to implement that without overburdening the system. Image if you have 10,000 users of your site and all of them are using those 2 Twitter features you’re asking for – that’s a lot of traffic back and forth between your site and Twitter’s site. It can be done, just thinking of how to handle it optimally.
In reply to: New BP Chat plugin for BuddypressThere were a couple of bugs in the chat that I found today – those would have caused it not to work properly. So if anyone can test again, thanks.
In reply to: New Twitter Plugin for BuddyPress@Scotm – thanks for the tip about the bug – there was a typo in the code – fixed it.
On P2, you can call a template tag to include the Tweet checkbox under the post form.
It’s nearly done… finding a few bugs, as you pointed out.
In reply to: New Twitter Plugin for BuddyPressEveryone can take the BP Twitter plugin for a joy ride over at the test site:
http://simplercomputing.net/bp
Sign up for an account and give it whirl (check your My Account page to configure your Twitter details) – plus be sure to check out the spiffy new ajax-based BP Chat plugin. Although chat isn’t useful if people aren’t online at the site to chat
That one is very much still in development… see the blog post for details.
@Cluelessbutpersistent – if you post the site URL where you saw then it’s possible someone could recreate the functionality… Also, where can someone find the totska plugin?
In reply to: New Twitter Plugin for BuddyPress@Scotm – so you have the BP nav bar at the top but only part of the nav items are available. Any plans to add more items, such as a My Account aspect? If so then people would have access to Settings, and thus, you could use this BP Twitter plugin that we’re creating.
If not then you could add a link to either /members/[username]/settings or /members/[username]/settings/twitter-admin to adjust their Twittter login info, and to /members/[username]/settings/twitter for viewing tweets etc. – and the plugin would work that way. Basically what I’m saying is that people need a way to configure their Twitter account – and if you’re not using the other aspects of BP then what’s the point of using BP in the first place? You could use P2 on top of WPMU without BP.
In reply to: New Twitter Plugin for BuddyPress@BeLogical – The release date was yesterday. I’m late
Nearly done though.
In reply to: New Twitter Plugin for BuddyPress@Scotm – what’s the URL for your site so I can take a look
In reply to: New Twitter Plugin for BuddyPress@Scotm : You’re using P2 as your home theme – is there way for users to get to their Settings page (as seen in the default BP theme) ? I ask because in order to tweet to Twitter a username and password is required, so a user has to configure that somewhere first.
With this plugin, it adds a new item to the Settings menu so that users can config their username and password. So if you’re somehow integrating the Settings menu into your site and users can access it to configure their Twitter login info then I can add a template tag that can be used in P2 so that you can easily add the required HTML elements to your P2 post form to cause a ‘tweet to twitter’ feature to work pretty easily.
So in short it’d work like this: You include the template tag in your post form template code and that tag will insert a checkbox that says something like “Also tweet this to Twitter”. If the user checks the box when making a post then a tweet will be sent to Twitter. And if they don’t have their Twitter login info configured then the checkbox won’t even appear in the form. Instead there would be a short message like “You can tweet this to Twitter if you configure your Twitter user name and password in your profile settings”
In reply to: New Twitter Plugin for BuddyPressTweet search widget for blog sidebars is complete. On to P2 integration possibilities….
In reply to: New Twitter Plugin for BuddyPressTweet from Wire added today. Working on search for a sidebar widget now. Then we’ll have a look at P2 integration needs.
