Precisely. What I am needing is a standalone forum with a little bit of integration with groups. There should be better configuration options for the forums that allow you to choose how you want to use it. The one click set up is a bit too simplistic.

Yeah I agree, the whole groups and forums things is a little counterintuitive considering the way most internet users have come to expect forums to behave.

I am having the same problem with groups and forums and the one click install. I might even switch to another forum script if I have time to build a bridge.

I tried reading through and searching the forum before posting this. Unfortunately there isn’t a detailed description of everything for BP like the WordPress Codex, its a bit frustrating. Reading through the code usually works but that takes a lot of time and coffee :)

https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-discussions/buddypress-forum/ that link doesn’t really say much except describe what the forum plugin is all about.

I have been playing around with the integrated forum and I don’t like the way you have to associate forums with groups and stuff. I want to have something like this forum on this site, like the standard forum structure you get.

A forum with a root thread in which categories can be made and child threads can be started. Like what Vbulletin, Phpbb and SMF et al has.

What I am trying to figure out is if its possible to do this with the integrated forums or should I go to the standalone Bbpress installation.

Thanks I have tried the manual upgrade and automatic upgrade on two different installations. Just to see. The automatic one worked but I had to delete the old theme folder, and the manual one also worked fine.

Does having the Buddypress core activated disable WPMU’s auto upgrade feature. Because I have a problem where my WPMU is stuck on an older version and the auto upgrade link at the top doesn’t appear. I would prefer to do an auto upgrade than a manual one.

@Andy thanks, I have begun hacking the parent theme since I might need to make changes to more than just CSS.

@realistdreamer I am wanting to do exactly that, I am looking at Theme Hybrid modified to work with Buddypress. Then that can be the parent theme, from which the children can be spawned.

This is a great idea because a lot of people live by Facebook and other social networks, integrating them all together could become a future direction of web 3.0 :)

For Buddypress 1.1 will there be a skeleton parent theme, or am I stuck with using the default parent theme and modifying that, then I might as well just create a child theme?

I have downloaded the bleeding edge 1.1 from trac and updated mysite. I am busy with a custom theme for my site and I would like to start with a skeleton theme. However I don’t mind hacking the default one if thats best. I am a bit new to developing WPMU themes although I have done themes for Joomla and hacked a couple of normal WP themes.
