1.6 allowing users to register with spaces in SN

Since upgrading to 1.6 after release, users are suddenly allowed to register with spaces in their usernames. The system is converting the spaces to a hyphen… which the user doesn’t realize… so they then send in lost password requests or create another screen name.

I can’t find anywhere in the settings to disable this, and it’s become a real customer service problem for my site.

We’re running all the latest versions of WP and BP with site-wide forums no groups, plugins are: JetPack, BP Album, Ad Rotate, WangGuard, BuddyPress Mobile, Custom Login Lite, Duplicate Post, and Social Author Bio. The host is HostGator.

It looks like something that might possibly work for your problem, and would disallow the use of spaces in the username since I believe it’s all handled on the WordPress side of things for BuddyPress anyhow concerning registrations and so forth…

Exactly the same here. I got emails from members who could not login because they didn’t realize the hyphen in their username. This is pretty annoying for both sides. The plugin “Restrict Usernames” does not solve the problem.

I’m also missing the “bp-members-signup.php” … has it been moved or included in another file?

Was anybody able to fix this ?? Still get the same error! username are allowed to register with blank spaces which then are transformed in hyphens without notifying the user. Would like to not allow spaces in usernames. Appreciate your help

Yeah, same problem. Major issue preventing me from launching site so any suggestions very welcome.

Thanks @inkblot but BP does manage the registrations, not WP — IE how it used to disable uppercase characters because of conflicts within BP. I’ll take a look at that plugin later – for some reason the Plugin directory isn’t loading properly atm.

Yep – that plugin didn’t work, I was still able to register with a space. The plugin hasn’t been updated in over a year either.
