Adding new custom components to the activity stream Show dropdown

Running BP on multisite and I’ve successfully added custom post types to the activity stream, but now I want to add an option to the activity stream dropdown filter so that visitors can sort it by cpt’s.
I’m refering to the dropdown that says “No Filter” or “Show Blog Posts”. I want to add a custom item to that, which will cause the activity stream to be filtered by the custom post type (the cpt I want to add to this is “products”.
Additionally, because they are custom post types, currently, products are being displayed when the visitor selects “Show Blog Posts” (since cpts are blog posts). When showing blog posts, I want it to disregard custom post types (this might be similar to the way BBpress 2.0 handles it, since they are also custom post types but don’t show up under Show Blog Posts).
