Admin bar theme isn\'t styled properly after following codex, works fine before

I’m having a little trouble understanding the Buddypress admin bar. When i upload a custom wordpress theme, and activate it, the admin bar integrates perfectly with the wordpress theme.

http://www.capitalistdog.net is a good example of what I’m talking about.

However, once I follow the steps on the following codex page, the formatting of the admin bar gets messed up. http://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/upgrading-a-buddypress-1-0-theme-for-buddypress-1-1/

This is happening on a local machine, so I can’t show you, but here’s a screenshot of the error. I’ve highlighted the admin menu with a white box http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/8669/44663371.jpg

I have copied over the CSS from the bp parent theme for the Admin Bar, and pasted it into my custom themes css, but the problem persists. This problem is persistent on all custom themes that I test, it always works at first, until i follow the steps in the codex.

Any idea where i’m going wrong? Thanks for any help
