bbPress migration to BuddyPress?

  • Forgive the ignorance, but I am just trying to sort out how these two plugins interact.

I have an existing WordPress instance, with bbPress installed. There is already community activity in the forum, and I don’t want to lose any of that.

I like what I see about BuddyPress, and I’d like to give it a try. However, I am concern about losing any forum posts, replies, etc in my existing bbPress instance. Is this a valid concern, or will it just work itself out?

What is the correct way to migrate from a simple forum only bbPress site to a more social oriented BuddyPress site without losing any of the forum posts?

    Thanks!

BuddyPress works with bbPress – same Lead Developer for both, JohnJamesJacoby. You don’t need to migrate anything. What kind of bbPress installation do you have? The stand-alone bbPress or bbPress 2.0+ the plugin? You should migrate stand-alone bbPress to bbPress the plugin first https://bbpress.org/forums/

Thank you for your reply. That does help set things straight in my mind.

Being new to this I didn’t realize that bbPress was (or used to be?) more than just a WordPress plugin. So, to answer your question, I am using the 2.0.2 version of the bbPress plugin for WP.

-bbPress has been a stand-alone forum software for many years and there is still a stand-alone version to date. Not sure how long the stand-alone version will be supported though.
    – bbPress the WP plugin came about with JJJ involvement. Stable version rolled out sometime WP 3.2.1 and it has been made compatible with BuddyPress 1.5
    – BuddyPress uses internal (fork of the standalone) bbPress as forums for groups since version 1.0 stable and now you can also install bbPress 2.0.2 as the sitewide forums. https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/
    – There are plans to migrate the forums for groups to the sitewide forums sometime soon.

You’re not likely to lose any forum posts. Always suscribe to backup backup backup database and server files. I would suggest that you set up a test installation ideally with the same server configuration as your current site is in and install WP and bbPress, import database, When you’ve got that going, install BuddyPress. https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/before-installing/
