BP Group Hierarchy

BP Groups are great and have many good features to enhance a community. Strangely though, BP groups can not be organized by hierarchy. This is especially bizarre considering WP’s basic content types and each of their abilities to be organized by taxonomy.
To think that groups, associations of people, don’t have organization is preposterous! Many organizations have sub-groups, committees, etc. Why isn’t this a basic feature of buddypress?
There was a plugin BP Group Hierarchy that tried to fill this need, but it’s been defunct for the last 3 years or so and is unusable at this point.
