Control settings for activity stream

Is there a plugin or setting where we can control what shows in our news feed/activity stream? Currently, it’s showing all profile updates, friendships, etc. and we would like to eliminate some of that so user posts don’t get lost in the mix.

Can you guide me in the right direction to clean up our news feed?
