Creating a at-a-glance section (Question)

  • newbie2011

Most social networking sites have a members homepage where a user can see whats going on at a glance. Well, I need to create a section called at a glance. This area will be the page that users see after logging in and gives information about that user activity and the entire site (i.e donations that they contributed, hours they volunteered, forum topics, etc…). Would it be easier to create a plugin or just create a new section in the core files.

Usually in BuddyPress that would be the site activity stream. You can embed that anywhere you want. Would that be a good solution? shows what it by default would show – but a number of plugins also show output there.

I see you mention hours they contributed – this seems more user specific not site specific (which the other things you list do fall into). If it was me I’d try and keep the two separate and maybe show a user table somehow of stats like that or leave it on profiles. That or perhaps what you are meaning would be an output like ‘bob volunteered 4hours today’ rather than a running total. In that case, it would be down to custom development or a plugin that is monitoring those donated hours. But, the hook is there in BuddyPress for it to output.
