custom login – NEED HELP!

Hello all, I am fairly new to wordpress/buddypress and was wondering how do I go about getting a custom login page. I tried doing these steps from this article: http://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/custom-login-page-in-buddypress but it seems like nothing happens when I create a bp-custom.php. (seems like it doesn’t even read the file). Can someone give me the exact file locations to put the bp-custom.php and login.php?
Can someone give me step by step instructions on how to do this? Much appreciated!
