customize registration text

I need to customize the registration text to reflect that only users with email on a specific domain will be able to register, and a few other minor tidbits. I’ve found most of the copy in bp-core-signup.php, but was hoping there is a method that won’t be overwritten every time I upgrade. Am I missing something obvious?
